This is at Warrior Path State Park in Colonial Heights near Gray.

I can't imagine flooding being a problem ever in Gray since it is rolling hill country. A small stream flows through the middle of Jonesboro behind the Court House but I don't think it has been a problem. If you don't locate right on the narrow flood plain of these creeks then flooding should not be an issue.

In general if you don't live in a mountain holler in Unicoi (or, as it is, in west downtown Johnson City), flooding won't be an issue for you. There may be some site-specific exceptions as Jim mentions.

Jonesborough did major flood mitgation work several years ago partly using, I believe, federal grants. Off the subject a bit but I may have posted something back then about this, also questioning why JC didn't apply for these kind of monies/grants, which I recall may have been available through the Army Corps of Engineers. Several folks at JC flood control meetings brought this possible solution up but never received a response or indication that the city had checked into applying for these funds..?

Yeah Sarah. I wonder if they checked into it maybe didn't care for some stipulations/ strings attached or if they just didn't follow through. I was wondering if they are trying to get any of this stimulus money that I see getting thrown around here like the road widening project they plan to start on Rte 36 north of Boone's Creek.
I haven't seen any flooding anywhere around here but we've been in a drought since before I moved in.
As for kid friendly activities in the original post, Jonesborough has that big water park don't they?

It depends on where you live. If you'll notice, most housing in Gray is built on hills. This is partly because there are a lot of hills in Gray. It is also partly because you don't want to build right at the bottom of some of those hills where flooding occasionally occurs.
Where I grew up, my grandfather owned about 65 acres of land and there was one large low-lying field that would flood pretty badly on occasions. But my family never built anything there. It was basically used for recreation (football, volleyball, baseball, etc.) because building there was not very prudent.
That situation is not atypical in Gray or Jonesborough. Not sure what you need this info for, but if you're building a house, my advice is to use some common sense on the issue. If you're buying a house, make sure the people who built it used some "common sense."
There aren't too many houses built right at the bottom of a flood plain, but you'll find them occasionally.

I've lived here a year and seen a couple of heavy rains, and all I've noticed is the normal water flow down the hills accross the roads, but nothing major at all. Allbeit, it hasn't rained heavily for days on end since I've been here. *Jonesborough that is* I have noticed some flooding out in Telford, but it's only in cow fields.
As for kid friendly things, there's a stuff a bear thing on Main Street, there's music on the square every friday afternoon begining at 6 or 7 where they have live bands come and play. There's a pretty big park down main street heading towards johnson city, which is really nice. They also do different things every saturday at the visitor center that may or may not be something you'd be interested in.

Kid-Friendly Activities
Jonesborough has the Wetlands Water Park and Gray has the Gray Fossil Site Museum. I live in Gray and there is Gray youth football, basketball and baseball. There is also soccer, basketball and flag football offered at Tri-Cities Baptist Church (Upward program) which is convenient to Gray. Gray also has a cub scout pack and boy scout troop. We are also quite close to Boone Dam and the recreational swimming area there.
I haven't seen any areas of wide flooding in the area (we've only lived here two years), but like every said, the area we are in is very hilly, and most the houses are the side of a hill.
