Jonesborough is good because you get be in a small town environment with about 5,000 people, yet you are less that 7 or 8 miles from downtown Johnson City, the industrial, commercial, and economic center for the northeastern Tennessee/southwestern Virginia area. Jonesborough has decent state-funded schools, although I am unaware of any local private schools. Aside from more traffic than you'd expect for a town of its size, Jonesborough has a friendly atmosphere and an old-tyme charm.

From a Jonesborough native...
I grew up in Jonesborough and attended the schools there. I would have to say that I have been very pleased with the education recieved. It is also true that, for a very short drive, you could be in Johnson City, where I later lived. Many activities throughout the year; lots of shopping and dining, etc. Easily accessed via the interstate. Honestly, if I could, I would move back tomorrow.

Jonesborough is a decent place. Very historic and like tokyopapa said, small town with larger town convenience not far away. I work 5 minutes from downtown and we do a lot of business (cabinets, plumbing, counter tops, etc.) in that area.
One word of caution- Don't let the flea market represent the town as a whole. It's worth seeing just to fulfill morbid curiosity but it really helps perpetuate every hick stereotype of the south. And if you're a PETA member you'll freak.

I also live close to Jonesborough. It is very nice and the schools are great! Nice people, lots of history and lots to do. If you don't want to live downtown in a historic house, it is the oldest city in TN and the whole of downtown is on the national historic register, you can look just to the outskirts, there are lots of nice neighborhoods or you can still find country property. email me and I can get you some maps and such if you would like.

Hiking in the Jonesborough area?
I have been through a lot of the threads and cannot seem to find anything regarding hiking opportunities in the Jonesborough area.
I am seriously considering moving there and, from everything I have read on the forums, Jonesborough sounds like a wonderful place. I am moving from Issaquah, WA where there are a large number of state forest areas that have numerous hiking and horse trails. One reason for picking NE TN is the proximity to the national forest.
But I am having difficulty finding information about where the trailheads are in the national forest and how far away they might be from Jonesborough. Some posts also mention local state parks but looking at web sites for these I have a major problem with them ...
When I hike I hike with my dogs.
Any info on local hiking spots when one simply wants to have a nice quiet outdoor hiking experience with one's "children" (dogs)?

I know this is an old post, but I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels slightly disconcerted seeing those poor animals in the extremely-too-small cages. And do they really have to fly that Confederate flag *every* flea market *right* on the road frontage??? Good grief.
But anyway, you're right, it is a fun place to visit, just to people watch. Or buy some socks with little USA flags on them.

Hello fellow washingtonian!!
Hello LindaV!! I also have been considering a move to NE Tennessee!! I am in Sumner, a few miles down the road from Puyallup. Have you ever visited Tennessee? My family and I did last year, my hubby has a lot of family there...and it was so beautiful! I fell in love with the area. Just wanted to say HI!
