Default More pollution from Eastman Plant

This happened a week ago, but Eastman didn't announce the spill until today. Dead fish=bad for humans.

Default Eastman Spill Results In Fish Kill

If you watched News 5 on Nov 3 you would have seen this story. The article here is very brief but what aired on News 5 described Eastman of being responsible for eight spills this year alone. Apparently, Eastman has had several spills over the years without any penalties, however, Eastman is now looking at fines.

I firmly believe that Kingsport residents should be very concerned about this situation and express their ideas to the Kingsport officials. I see a lot of people who fish this river, many with their children. There are lots of people who enjoy the Greenbelt that runs next to this river in many spots.
An Eastman spokesperson said there was no threat to people. Maybe not, but what about the fish it killed and the animals and birds that feed on those fish. What is the long term effect of these spills?

No one probably hates this happening more than the folk at EASTMAN.

1. Someone likely was fired over the incident.
2. BIG fine coming ... probably from the EPA.
3. Terrible publicity for a company that tries to do a lot for the community.
4. They self-reported an incident that they otherwise probably could have gotten away with.
5. It was just a mistake. They likely took a week to report it because they needed to do an internal investigation to determine all the facts.

I think my expectations are realistic. My family has explored other areas of the south and spent 2 weeks on the SC coast. The small city of Georgetown, SC had a historic, walkable downtown and lovely waterfront, but the smell from the paper plant in town was enough for my wife and I to realize it wasn't the place. Here in Northern New England, the air is fresh and clean for the most part, but there are places with paper mills or other factory emissions that I find bothersome. I'm only talking about what is apparent to the nose. I am aware that pollution isn't always something you can smell, and that it exists, in varying degrees, wherever you go.

I appreciate hearing from residents of ETN, noting their observations. There is only so much you can glean from tables and statistics. From what I read, even considering my political views may be different than many of you, you are my kind of people and ETN is my kind of place. I will visit soon.

Mark

Your expectations are realistic I believe. There are many, many, beautiful places in this country to relocate to and enjoy beautiful scenery, clean air/water, and a good standard of living. I found several in my personal search. I chose northeast TN. I do hope you can find the time to come visit the area. Please D/M us if you have concerns and thoughts as to your choice in living in northeast TN or southwest VA
