It looks more like a '90s grunge rocker like Kurt Cobain or Dave Navarro. And the religious zealots going nuts over it now, were probably complaining about the kids who listened to said grunge rockers in the '90s, calling it "Satan's music" or "Devil rock." They probably also did their best to keep any related acts from coming to Johnson City at the time on the basis that most things on MTV were "satanic."
I'm going to doubt Jesus had such neatly trimmed hair or a well managed goatee.
