Talking Grad Student looking for apt or starter home

Hi,
I'm finishing up my under grad here in Memphis and hoping to attend UT Knox for graduate school. I haven't had a chance to visit, but am curious about the areas that would be safe and close to campus. I will be moving up there with my boyfriend, so we are in need of an apartment/condo/townhouse for rent or a condo/townhouse/single family home to buy as a starter home. Obviously we won't be making a ton of money while we're in school, but we still want a decent neighborhood.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. :]

The only area I'd avoid is east Knoxville, which is like Shangri-La compared to the "bad" parts of Memphis.

For any real suggestion you'll have to be more specific.

Hey Pigtails, congrats and welcome to greater Knoxville. You could qualify for a THDA rural development property, which is funded and requires very little down and would work great for a starter home. You would be wise to purchae now, as plenty of inventory and payments would be same as rent and would be building equity for now, and lots of great deals. Good luck and happy hunting.
