I read an interesting article the other day. It was pretty staggering.
I knew that they have been trying to clean up the area for years and I know that the national laboratory is still in operation. What I didn't know was that they are building this enormous facility that will house ALL of the NATION'S enriched uranium. "The exact amount of Y-12's uranium inventory is classified, but it's estimated to be in the range of 400 metric tons." A coworker's father was a security guard there. He said if anything ever happens, Oak Ridge will be toast. Even worse, he said it would take about 24 hours before people in the surrounding area, such as Knoxville, would die, and at that point we would probably want to be dead. KnoxNews: Local |

You know, I guess I figure there are so many different crazy things that happen in every part of the country....I'm not going to dwell on this. I guess if it happened I'd be dead anyway and wouldn't even know it.

That is another not so well kept secret of The Secret City. Growing up in Kingsport they used to tell us that if OR ever got bombed that we would get it too. I remember hearing at one time that the effects would reach as far as Memphis??? I don't give it any thought, we all have to meet our maker sooner or later.

Awesome that they put that info in the media so the terrorists know just where to target. That always amazes me.
They publicize things like this...or weaknesses in the security at a particular airport, or whatever, then can't understand why those creeps take advantage of the info. In this day and age, I think the media should use more discretion in what they report, keeping in mind that it's not just you and I who are reading it. There are others who are reading, learning, and planning to use the information for the destruction of this country. I understand it's free speech, but it just doesn't seem wise to put this info out there for just anybody. |

I agree. I don't think I would have written the story. There is such a thing as "for the greater good" and I've used it.
Bear in mind, though, that they invited the media in, which I find to be very odd. My thinking is they know that the terrorists already know. I also think they put out a lot of disinformation on purpose. Something to think about. |

Yeah, it's weird--maybe they thought it'd discourage the bad guys by talking about how heavily it's guarded or something.
Oh well...! |

the flea market in Sweetwater is on the Homeland Security's list of places most likely to be targeted in TN!!! Go figure THAT one out!!!

That is bizarre.
They went into some caves in Afghanistan and found all kinds of information about the Fort Myers, Florida school system. I think terrorists will try to go for something low-profile this time. LauraC said they allow flights over security zones in Oak Ridge. Very creepy. |
