I'm a 31 year old single male looking to relocate and start a new life. I've lived in Palm Beach county in south Florida all of my life and feel like I don't belong here anymore. The people are very rude and it's like a third world country down here. Everything is so fast paced down here and The crime is also though the roof. The weather is hot and humid six months out of the year. I've had the same job working for the city for the past 12 years. I was going to wait another eight years to move but they eliminated the 20 year and out retirement plan and pension. So I plan to make a move with in the next year or so. I love hiking, camping, mountain biking, kayaking, fishing and geocaching. Just about anything outdoors. I travel up to North Georgia and North Carolina about 3 times a year for weeks at a time just to Hike and enjoy the mountains and the peace they bring me. I've been doing some research on places to move close to the mountains and Knoxville And Asheville are on top of my list. I'm looking to move to one of these bigger city's in the mountains because I will have a better chance of finding a job then a small city. I don't mind what kind of job I can find as long as have enough to pay rent and enough for food. The reason Knoxville is my number one choice is the cost of living looks lower then in Asheville. When I do make my move I will be financially secure and will be looking to rent a 1 bedroom apartment for me and my dog. I would like to live just outside of downtown but no more then a 30 min commute. What sections of the city are good places to live and check out. I'm looking to stay in the rent range of no more then $650 a month for an apartment.
Thanks,
Russell

Welcome to the TN forum.
I know how you feel that is exactly what I have been saying about PBC as well. What city do yu work for? If you don't mind me asking. Where do you live in PBC?
The city I worked for has been talking about doing the same thing with the retirement, if they haven't done so already.

Hello,
I work For the city of Lake Worth and live there to.
I lived in southwest Florida for about 10 years and have lived in Knoxville for five. We love it here and consider it the best decision we have ever made.
There are a lot of areas that fit that bill. We have some wonderful neighborhoods and finding your spot should be very easy.
Also, the latest rate for unemployment in Knox County is 7.7 percent. That's leaps and bounds better than south Florida, but I would still encourage you to secure a job before moving. When we moved, it was during the housing and economic boom and my husband found a job within hours of arrival, but he went to two years of technical school to be a mechanic and had years of experience by the time we got here.
Lastly, I would encourage you to visit both cities to get the "feel" for which one will best fit you.
Hello,
I work For the city of Lake Worth and live there to.
So they are changing the retirement system. That stinks. I worked for the City of Lake Worth for 19 years in Finance and retired on Sept 30, 2009. YEAH. What dept do you work in? The City of Lake Worth used to be and could be a nice little town. They just need to get the wacko's out of office and run the city like it should be run. The City of Lake Worth used to be a nice place to work, I thought I would work until I died because I liked my job so much. And then things changed about five years ago for me. But now looking back, I guess it was a good thing for me.
And now we are moving to TN late Oct or Early Nov. and we can hardly wait. We are in the Southeast TN area. I didn't want to be on a mountain but close enough to go see them if I wanted to. And didn't want a lot of snow but close enough to go see it if I wanted to. So we ended up in between Athens, Sweetwater area. When we first when up there to look around we headed to Knoxville and once we got there it was nice but not quite what we were looking for. So we kept looking we knew we wanted East TN for sure. Since we grew up in FL we didn't want to get stuck on a mountain when it snowed and not be able to leave or get stuck in town and not be able to get home. So we decided that we wanted rolling land and not quite as much snow. That's how we ended up in Southeast TN. Looks like we are in the woods at the property but we are only about 15 mins to all the stores we need. We love it.
I wish you luck in your move. When are you planning to move? Renting is a good idea. Then you can research areas that you might like better.

FloridatoNiota: Are you retiring? If not, do you have a job lined up?
I already retired on Sept 30, 2009. Yeah, Yahoooooo.
Oh, that's wonderful! I had researched the area that you are moving to but there were not many jobs around there. The school ratings are not good, either. I would imagine it would be a very quiet area for a retiree and I suspect it is nice to live in the middle of Chattanooga and Knoxville, although a long drive for a commute.
I lived in the Asheville area a few years ago. I hated the pretentious smugness of the place. It is a very expensive area to live and I found the residents to be mostly Northeastern transplants and very little southern influence left in the area.
We are now in Knoxville and love this place. Knoxville may be a small city, but it is like a big overgrown town and the people are great and friendly.
All the best to you,
Pam
I completely agree with you about south Florida! People are just so rude down here, the weather is awful, and I need a new chapter in my life. DELETED PER USER'S REQUEST. It can't come here fast enough!! I wish you the best with deciding where to move. The most important thing is that you get out of here quick!!! Either place will be a welcomed change for you!
Julie
