The current (October 2010) issue of Consumer Reports has a rating of the major auto insurance companies.

Best agent in town is Mansour Hassan with State Farm. I know several people that use him. He's the guy on one of their national commercials. He's probably not the cheapest but the customer service is phenomenal. I've worked for a home and auto insurer and cheaper isn't always better. I personally use him for my auto and home and would have used him for our family business except our industry is high-risk and we had to go with another insurer.

State Farm Insurance: Mansour Hasan

I sent you a private message with my insurance guy. Saved me $500 from the State Farm I had for ever.

Cheap insurance isn't as important as finding a company that will deal with you in good faith when/if you have to make a claim. Some of the WORST offenders in the world of Bad Faith Insurance are companies like State Farm and Allstate (tied for second worst in the nation, according to number of claims not paid and complaints filed against them). Research any insurance company before deciding to do business with them. Don't just check with the BBB, check with the state's Insurance Commission as well. Hit the web and see what their customers say about them, too.

While we're on the topic of auto insurance, don't go with the state minimums either. Those numbers are ridiculously low in every state in the country. Having been injured in a car accident I can say without a doubt that one accident can ruin your day (and then some) if you're carrying state minimums. $25,000 of coverage will just barely cover medical expenses in some cases, and won't touch lost wage claims or anything beyond that. You could quickly find a jury awarding the contents of your bank account, life insurance, or worse (like the value of your home and property) to someone else in the event of an accident. Bumping that coverage up is cheap, too. It only costs a few dollars a month to increase your auto insurance to reasonable levels ($250,000 is far more reasonable for a 'per person' figure - but I'd still recommend an umbrella policy that sits over top of the auto policy, just in case).

And no, I don't sell insurance. I just know from experience how high the numbers can go in a *simple* accident.
