Relo from Orlando
Hi All,
Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide. My husband and I may be relocating to the Knoxville are in a VERY short amount of time. We will be visiting the area next weekend and have ONE day to find a place to live in person. We will probably be moving to Knoxville in two to three weeks if the move is to happen. I am having a very difficult time trying to figure out where to live. I would like to take the opportunity to go to Grad School at UT and would like to be within walking/bus distance of UT campus. However, my husband will be a young professional in the area and we do not want to deal with the hassles or expense of student housing. His job frequently requires him to be up at 4am even on the weekends so we do NOT want to be living next to late night parties. The biggest "problem" we have is having two small (12 lbs each) dogs and so we want to have some grass for them to run around in.
All of the complexes I've researched online are too expensive, too aimed at students, or too far from campus. Does anyone have any suggestions? We would really appreciate it!!!
Thank you!

"Too far" is likely using the Orlando paradigm for Driving. I live in Alcoa (right next to the Airport) and can get downtown in about 15 minutes. Driving here is nothing like MCO.... for now..

Exactly, you can get to Downtown from almost anywhere from a 40 mile radius around Knoxville in 30 minutes or less..

Check the MetroPulse classified. It's the alternate weekly and has a lot of ads for places downtown and near campus.

I know from experience that Pittman Properties will lease to owners of well-behaved pets. Used to anyway. He owns several houses in the historic areas.
A good listing of apartment pet policies is here:

This may be too late, since they are already probably here, but just in case they didn't find anything...
Bill Pittman is on this board. He has a house available. Google Pittman Properties.I have no affiliation with Bill Pittman, in fact, I don't even like the area that he rents in, but that area would be perfect for a young couple that wants to be near UT but not want to deal with student housing. He does rent to dog owners.

I'd like to second this. I don't know Bill Pittman, nor have I ever lived in any of his houses. But I have seen the houses he has renovated, and they are absolutely adorable, usually smaller, Victorian cottages or craftsman bungalows. He takes great pride in renovating houses in the historic neighborhoods in North Knoxville and renting them to responsible people who have an appreciation for the historic nature of the area.
I know of several older U.T. students who live in this part of town; you're only 10 minutes from campus but far enough away to avoid the drunken frat boy parties.

Thank you for the advice
Hi all,
Thank you for the advice. When we actually visited the Knoxville area we were extremely surprised at how quickly we got around to everything. What looked like very far (using the Orlando Paradigm for driving was just 15 or 20 minute drive. Hopefully, not too many people move to Knoxville to change that in the coming years. My husband did get the job offer so we are looking to relocate in the first week of September and thankfully we've found a couple of places within our price range to choose from. I did notice the Pittman properties online so I will have to look more into that. Thank you again for the advice because it certainly helped us have a starting place to look while we were up there.
My husband and I were both shocked at how nice everyone was in Knoxville, especially in the driving arena. We like the feeling of the town and we hope we finally find a place that is in between the weather of Florida and the small town feel of Indiana that we both grew up with. Thanks again!

Driving around town and especially campus will change once school is back. Forget going anywhere on game day unless you time things perfectly.
In May 2008 they will close I40 through downtown so I40, 640, and I75 interstate traffic will be in complete gridlock for awhile. The secondary roads will also fill up from the overflow. Knoxville blogs will be interesting to read when this goes down...

Hi,
I moved from Orlando to East Tennessee back in February this year. I love it here compared to Florida. In Orlando it can take 30 minutes to get to the grocery store because of traffic and all. Up here I can go almost anywhere I need in 5 minutes or less. And if it is not in town then it is 15-20 minutes away in Turkey Creek area.
And the people are so friendly up here. The worst server in TN is better than the best server in FL. I mean come on. Who in FL is going to call you "darling"?
