Powell itself is great for families.

Where did you hear that? West Knoxville is actually the nicest part, I think. East Knoxville is where you don't want to live. I have heard North Knoxville is nice, but I haven't been up there much, so I'm not sure.

West Knoxville has the newer homes. Fountain City, north of Knoxville, has homes that are older but the area is safe.

I would assume it's because of the price; it's going to be difficult to find a reasonably nice house for a family at $850/month. But yeah if you don't mind the yuppiness of it it's a good safe place to raise a family.

I don't recommend most of East Knoxville within the 640 loop to families, with the possible exception of Holston Hills. For more adventurous adults it can be fine. Further out is fine too if you don't mind a slightly rural setting.

North Knoxville may be your best bet. Fountain City is frequently voted the best place to live in Knoxville. It has a lot of older homes (think 1950s) that are well kept up and reasonably priced. It's close to shopping and downtown, and it's maybe not quite as safe as W Knoxville statistically speaking, but it's pretty close. The key to avoiding crime in most of Knoxville seems to be don't deal drugs.

Powell's nice too, but you may have to pay a premium for some of those newer suburbs.
