You'll also be close to a great dirt race track in Tazewell.
Tazewell Speedway Tazewell, Tennessee
A lot cheaper than a NASCAR race and a lot more action. In addition to the regular Saturday night shows they have several big shows a year. They run dirt late models, the cars Tony Stewart and Ken Schrader race when they want to have fun. Several of the big stars, like Bobby Labonte, own dirt late model teams. They race sometimes at Taz or at Volunteer in Bulls Gap.
Tazewell is beautiful, right at the Cumberland Gap. Head to Kentucky for shopping to avoid TN sales tax.

Knoxgarden,
Thanks for your positive perspective on Tazewell and the information on the Tazewell Speedway. Who knew and I must say from the web page, it does seem exciting and something both my husband and I would enjoy. I am visiting this site entirely too much as there is so much to learn about the Knoxville area. Shopping in Kentucky? The thought would never occur to me and you are right about the lower sales tax rate and Middlesboro is what 15-20 minutes away?

Background radiation is just the radiation that's measured in everyday life, in our bodies, soil, water, food, everything. There is an abnormally high amount in E TN. There are many tons of uranium that have gone missing, lost in the process. Now dispersed around the area.
As far as I know Crossville is fairly clean by TN standards. Someone from the Pacific Northwest would probably think it was very polluted.

Along these lines I have met people from a place that perhaps the land was sold off and there is new development? Calderwood...it was a little commuinty prior...off of 129 in Blount County...they all swam in the lake there ... 3 generations of families with cancer. PCBs? Only the people who came from there talk about it. thanks.

Sounds familiar.
In our small neighborhood there are three women with cancer right now, and another died last year. One woman is in her 20s and has two children. How sad.

Yep, the more I read the more I think TN is truly just a warmer version of PA. The small NW PA county I live in is full of cancer patients, use to be just the older poulation, now lots of 20-30 somethings. Acid rain, sulphur and iron in the water from old coal mines and run off from farms have ruined the ground water in many areas. Actually, I think the whole country is a mess. Someone mentioned the Pacific NW as unpolluted, perhaps.
This summer when we were exploring the area around Watts Bar we started calling the evacuation signs, "run like hell signs"
There are no Utopias on this earth, we humans have destroyed them. We can select a place to spend our time and enjoy life. While we are enjoying our life perhaps we will come to our senses and clean up this mess of a planet before it is too late for the next generations. Seems industry etc. only sees the fast buck.
I'm still opting to retire to TN in 3 years if all goes well.

Deborah,
have you checked out The Center Hill and Central area?
No traffic, great views and miles and miles of lakes and rivers,

You might also want to check out Douglas Lake and Cherokee Lake. Dandridge, the town around Douglas Lake has some beautiful homes. Cherokee Lake is at the Clinch Mountain and the area is beautiful. Look around Bean Station for a beautiful place to live.
