Question Public Transit in Knoxville vs Chatt vs Tri Cities

How is the public transportation system in Knoxville vs Chattanooga vs Tri Cities? Is it conceivable to live in any of these places without a car? If anyone who has lived in any of these cities without a car could help that would be great. Thanks!

The Chattanooga forum and the T.C. forum would probably get you the best answers and replies for those areas.

If you worked downtown or at the University, and you lived downtown, or close by, you could do without a car fairly well. Otherwise, it would be tough.

Depending on your lifestyle, all of these cities/regions will be difficult to navigate without a car, honestly. Knoxville's public transit may be the most advanced, due to the lines running through the UTK campus fairly often to Bearden/Ft Sanders/downtown.

Thanks folks. That's quite a fancy public transit website.. I'll be sure to go through it.

As far as my lifestyle goes I've gone without a car pretty much my whole life. I prefer to walk, it keeps be thin (I like to eat) and I'm kind of a tree hugger But I guess the best bet will be to see for myself. I'll be down in two weeks (with a car) but I'll give it a go and see what it's like.

If I relocate to Knox I am definitely considering downtown which leads me to my next question: What are the decent neighborhoods for a thirty something single female to live? Are there any neighborhoods to stay away from? I guess I should browse other threads but I figure while I'm here..

Many thanks, Heather

Thanks again for all of your help.

Fourth and Gill, Old North, Oakwood/Lincoln Park, Emoriland/Fairmont, North Hills and Parkridge. If you are coming from up north you may be surprised at the lack of sidewalks. There are some in these areas but most of the entire area is without.

None are friendly without a car, but Knoxville would be the clear winner as far as bus systems go. CARTA in Chattanooga is decent, I don't know much about tri-city transit.

I've only been here a year, and I'd love to live without a car - and I have in NY...but in the Tri-cites it would be a severe hardship.
