The good thing about Knoxville is you can live out in the country and still only be 30 minutes from just about everything.
Yep! In fact you can live 15 minutes of less from downtown and be out in the country. I live under ten minutes from downtown on a little less than half an acre and hear guns going off all the time. I live right near I-75, just north of downtown, right next to a top-notch elementary school. Knox County has very good schools.
Don't let the state's test scores fool you, either. Tennessee was the first to win The Race To The Top because we raised our standards, among other reasons. What is not often talked about is when NCLB was implemented, the states set their own goals. Some states have very low standards. Tennessee does not.
Regarding schools, Knox, Oak Ridge and Maryville all have good systems.
You can easily live out in Knox County, especially north of downtown and further north of that, have a little bit of land where no one minds that you target shoot, and have your kids get a great education.
As mentioned, we have a lot of hospitals per capita. Off the top of my head Park West and Fort Sanders are fabulous, Mercy has St. Mary's just north of downtown and up in Powell. I live in the middle of the two of them. And there is UT Medical. We have a great medical community.
Thank you so much, very informative, and I appreciate the specifics. Honing in on what we want and where to find it now, a little at a time. Really looking forward to our visit.
Welcome and not to dispute the Seymour thought, but it is nowhere close to Pigeon Forge and only about a 20 minute drive into either Baptist Hospital or even Ut. and you will find more chances to getting your price range for the house and maybe an acre or two. Have fun and happy touring!
I would suggest Fort Sanders Regional hospital and Childern's Hospital. There oncology groups are one of the best. They are located in the University Of Tn area and right across the street from each other. It is 5 miles west to to Old Bearden District. That is were I grew up and is a great area. You are under 1/2 mile to West High School ( graduated from there) . What ages are your chilren? What grades will they be in?
The best thing about Bearden is the feel. You can walk to almost any resturant, Earth Fare, bank shops. It is great. Forest Hils Blvd has some great historic homes and have been kept in great shape. You feel that you are in the mountains without being there. I grew up on the Blvd. The first house on the left fronting sutherland ave. I wish I had my house back. My mother past and I had to sell. We already had a home in South Knoxville in Lake Forest..
I hope you will be able you find you a great place.
I'm starting to make out an itinerary, and trying to find the best "touristy" things to keep my family interested. So far I am looking at one of the zip line tours, Bald River Falls, Coker Creek falls, The Lost Sea, Forbidden Caverns, and Ruby Falls in Chattanooga. I'm also making a list of restaurants from another post here as well.
Do any of you know if the zip lines are all about the same? Is one better than another as far as view and excitement level?
I'm also looking for roads to drive on to get a flavor for Knox County and area and see what property might be available and what the near-by rural areas look like. When I look a Google map, it's clear what the suburbs look like (all streets and neighborhoods), but it's rather difficult to see what the areas outside of the city look like. Are there any routes you would take someone on to show off the area? I'm sure we'll spend some time just wandering, and we'll ask around when we arrive, thought I'd ask here as well. Thank you in advance.

I can't respond to the Zipline Tours question, are you planning on taking a tour to these areas?
I can tell you that Bald River Falls is absolutely beautiful. However, I has low "excitement" factor unless waterfalls just generally excite you. That's simply because it's a waterfall along the side of the road - period. You pull over, look, pause and enjoy, and move on. Now, I LOVE going there, but would probably plan a picnic lunch and combine it with swimming at Indian Boundary if I was going to make it a real day trip. Never been to Coker Creek Falls, but it's the same general direction as Bald River Falls until the road forks in Tellico Village. I will tell you that Tellico is tiny and Coker Creek is miniscule - aboslutely nothing there except a post office and maybe a gas station and convenience store, I'm not certain. Beautiful area though. Coker Creek Falls - Tennessee Vacation Anticipated excitement level for me would be non-existent, but again, I didn't even know there was a waterfall there and I live here I'd guess that either place is about 1.5 - 2 hrs drive from Knoxville and beautiful scenery on the trip. I'd take Hwy 411 from Maryville and then Hwy 68 from Madisonville.
I haven't been to Ruby Falls either, but would love to go. If you go there, you absolutley should go to Rock City Rock City. They're not far from each other and both are in Chattanooga. There's also the Chattanooga Choo Choo Chattanooga, TN | Attractions | Things to Do
Also, visit the aquarium in Chattanooga Things to Do at the Tennessee Aquarium and there are lots of historical places to see in that area. A combination of any of these places would have a significant excitement level for me. Chattanooga is about an hour and a half from Knoxville on the interstate. I probably wouldn't take back roads for this because there's plenty to do once you get to Chattanooga.
I can't believe I lived in Pigeon Forge for nine years and never went to Forbidden Caverns Forbidden Caverns Sevierville TN The greatest Attraction UNDER the Smokies especially since I love caves. I think this would be a great trip and would combine it with the huge range of other tourist activities available in Sevier County. I think that would bring a considerable excitement level to your family - just go on a weekday. Sevierville is about 40 min - 1+ hr from Knoxville, depending upon route and traffic. I'd take Hwy 441/Chapman Hwy and come back through Townsend, Hwy 321.

I agree with the Chattanooga recommendations. I'd add in the DUCKS tour. It's great!
I've never been to the Forbidden Caverns, either. However, if you are going to The Smokys be sure and stop at Cades Cove. I've never met anyone that doesn't like that place.
Looking to relocate and East Tn looks the best to me, but I am overwhelmed by all the possibilities. My family and I are planning a trip this summer to visit the Knoxville area for a week as a vacation and exploration of as many areas as we can see. We must be within 20 or 30 minutes drive to major hospital for employment. We want a good public high school, and I like the option of U of TN for college. I want to be near a radio controlled airplane club or buy enough land that I can fly in my own yard (if I can afford enough land). I see there is a nice R/C club just north of Farragut. Like to be within 30 minute drive to shopping/restaurants. Not sure if we will end up in a subdivision or in a rural area (I prefer rural, wife prefers sub, still working on a comprimise there). I'm tired of cookie-cutter houses, but options are open. I dream of having a ranch style home with either a 3 car garage or ability to have a pole barn or second garage on the property. I have read as many threads here as I could find, and thinking maybe Seymour, Farragut, Maryville, Strawberry Plains? Can someone explain the difference between some of these areas? We don't want to be too close to tourist areas. I'm guessing price range around $200K - $250K? For our visit are there any "must see" areas to get a taste of the local communities? I'd like to narrow down my choices so I can then contact a realtor to get an idea of what's available.
Appreciate any help you can give.
I think there must be a radio controlled airplane club around here somewhere. When I go to the community college in Oak Ridge on a Sunday morning (campus is empty since no one lives there) to photograph birds, there is sometimes a man there with his various different radio controlled airplanes in the parking lot. I've photographed 3 of them on different occasions.
Here, I just did some checking. There's a club in Knoxville:
Wow, you are all very helpful, and I (we) appreciate the information. Rather than staying in a hotel, we are looking at staying in a cabin in the area. I think I have one lined up. We'll keep you posted, and still looking for any tips on the zip lines. I got my wife and son excited about the zip lines, train ride, paddle wheel ride, caverns, and waterfalls. I figure if we are there in the hottest temps of the year, we should get a feel for the summers.
Thanks for your time & help!
