Hi epic19,
I thought I might touch a nerve, guess I did. I'm a native Tennessean and I too have lived in the Bay area, LA, and SD area. If you want to leave CA for something different there may be better choices for you.
Have you considered GA, SC, NC, VA? All have strong economies, similar summer weather, warmer winters, all are few hours or less to some nice beaches. The cost of living vs salary is on par with east TN. There are many great schools in all these states.
Knoxville is not an absolutely terrible place by any means, it's also nothing really special. There may be a better choice for relocation for you. A 2000 mile move to a culturally different place shouldn't be taken lightly. I encourage you to research other places as well.
Best of luck.

Thanks everyone so much for all of the information. This move is defiantly not something we are taking lightly, but I am going to be attending vet school, and there are only 17 in the entire country, any many of them are way up north and I know that those winters are not something I want to do so our options are somewhat limited. We are also seriously looking at the Raleigh, NC area, so I thought I would get on here to see what people thought about the two.
Thanks again!

epic19,
The vet school at UT is very good, but NC State's vet school is much better, ranked in the top 5 in the US. There are actually 28 vet schools in the US. A good friend of mine is a Veterinarian.
Raleigh is a great city with much diversity. There won't be nearly as much culture shock coming from CA. There is more traffic but also much much more to do in and around town. The winters are milder and it's under two hours to the beach.
Best of luck to you.

Raleigh is also more expensive than Knoxville. The original post said they have a limited budget and would like an acre with a nice house for less than $200k. You can't do that in Raleigh.

It would depend on where they wanted to live in either city. 1ac and nice house for under $200K is available in Raleigh as well. Raleigh is more expensive but the cost of living vs salary is on par.
Why not rent for a year until you find something in an area that you come to love and can seek out the best deal?
Best of luck.

Sure you can. You just won't be able to choose the most expensive subdivision or area. Bedroom communities to Raleigh (Fuquay Varina, Clayton, etc.) have housing of this type/price available.

My husband is a CA transplant. He says moving to TN was one of his better decisions in life... after marrying me of course!

Good one Mytown,
I don't think this was a debate over leaving CA. That could be debated for an eternity. We could look at the number of people migrating from TN to CA vs CA to TN, etc etc... and we would probably get nowhere...
Epic19 is going to vet school and wanted to about Knoxville and NC State in Raleigh.

Just out of curiosity, has there ever been a poster asking for opinions on moving from TN to CA?

Sure, they just wouldn't ask here. They'd ask in the CA forum.
