That's all well and good, but almost all of the new business that was written about in that article is food related, small eateries, restaurants and such. Those types of businesses typically do not create high paying jobs. This area doesn't need more burger joints and pizzerias. I'd like to see more high paying industries move in, like manufacturing and high tech.

Most manufacturing & high tech is on hold now due to the economy. We're not seeing much new prospect activity in this area. However, there are a few solid projects out there that this area has been short listed for. Keeping fingers crossed!

In the current economic climate any job growth is a positive. It sure beats businesses moving out and/or closing as is more common throughout the country.

High tech? Lots of that over in Oak Ridge. Here's a great example. ORAU: Partnering with UT-Battelle / Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)

And that is just one example of our innovative way of attracting jobs. Here's another. Regional Economic Development | Knoxville Oak Ridge Innovation Valley | Tennessee

My friend just left KUB to work for Green Mountain. Today is his first day. GMCR

The article is written by a student at UT. It's fine but there is far more going on around here besides restaurant openings. If you live here you see it everyday.

We were recently named first in the nation for green job growth. Knoxville Chamber - Knoxville Region is #1 in Green Job Growth (http://www.knoxvillechamber.com/news/290/53/Knoxville-Region-is-1-in-Green-Job-Growth/ - broken link)

And I might add that our business, open one year, is doing well, despite having to deal with road construction for about 10 months. And we are not in the food industry.

We are:

#1 for Green Job Growth, <="" em="">, 2011

9th Best City for Jobs, Forbes, 2011

Editor's Location Pick, Business Facilities, 2010

8th among Best Places to Raise a Family, Forbes, 2010

6th Top Ten Mid-Markets of the Decade, Southern Business & Development, 2010

4th Best City for Real Estate Investments, Local Market Monitor, 2010

7th Top Metro for Alternative Energy Industry Leaders, Business Facilities, 2010

Top 5 Metro for Economic Growth Potential, Business Facilities, 2010

Among the top 10 Best Places for Business and Careers, Forbes, 2006, 2007, 2008

One of only 12 Solar Cities chosen for a grant by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2008 to integrate solar technology into public buildings

UT's Supply Chain & Logistics graduate program ranked #9 by U.S. News & World Reports for 2010.

I know there's plenty of high tech in Oak Ridge. But, I'd like to see some of that kind of business come to Knoxville. Manufacturing, too.

That's why it's called the Knoxville-Oak Ridge Innovation Valley.

Are you having a hard time finding a job?

Scripps Networks Interactive is based in Knoxville and has added a bunch of folks in the last six months. More jobs open - some of those are high tech jobs as well.

I agree with more manufacturing! We are hoping to move out there next year & that's the line of work my husband is in.

Count your blessings that you are seeing any new commerce. In Metro Detroit, the only thing growing is unemployment and abandoned buildings.
