That 5k should buy you a lot of gas to get to the library when you need high speed. Meanwhile, netflix still uses the good ole P.O. .

$5000... I'd just stick to reading books and forget about digital media and entertainment for awhile. Stinks you just bought the new TV and can't get good use out of it.

Reminds me of a buddies cabin up in Dandrige I used to visit. Got not signals of any sort which forced ya to go old school. Was pretty nice to be able to get away from it all from time to time.

Good luck.

They do make cell service booster antennas if you can a line of sight to the tower. If your properly has elevation changes you may be able to get signal at a higher elevation even if you can't at the house. You can order ISDN from AT&T and they have to install it regardless of what it costs them, but that will only be 128Kbs and even slow DSL these days around 1.5Mbs (10x faster).

Thanks guys, but below is why I resurrected the thread. It's a new service from Verizon that's supposed to enhance internet in rural areas. I'm pretty psyched and thought it might be of interest to others:

From Verizon's "Home Fusion Wireless" Press Release:

Dallas, Nashville, Tenn., and Birmingham, Ala., will be the first areas to get the service, later this month. By the end of the year, Verizon hopes to provide it everywhere it has coverage with its new “LTE” wireless network.

The service requires the installation of a cylindrical antenna, about the size of a 5-gallon bucket, on an outside wall. The hardware costs $200, but the work is free.

$60 per month for 10 gigabytes of data per month (about 10 hours of HD-quality video using an Internet streaming service such as Netflix)
20 gigabytes of data for $90 per month
30 gigabytes for $120 per month.

$10 per gigabyte of overage on any of the plans.

The $60 and $90 plans provide one-third more data per month than corresponding plans sold by ViaSat Inc. for its Exede satellite broadband service.

Why Verizon is killing DSL & cheap broadband — Broadband News and Analysis

"...Verizon says it is marketing this as an alternative for consumers in broadband-limited markets, where DSL or satellite might be the only options. In the case of satellite broadband, consumers also have caps and limited plans that cost a lot, so this compares somewhat favorably to those..."
______

Andrew Berg | Wireless Week

"...Verizon Wireless today introduced HomeFusion Broadband, a new service that will bring wireless LTE service into the home as a primary broadband connection for those in areas with limited options.

Customers can choose several usage-based plans, beginning at $59.99 per month for 10 GB of data, or $120 per month for 30 GB of data. A one-time equipment fee of $199.99 applies, and installation of the antenna is free.

With the Home Fusion service, Verizon's LTE network is delivered to an antenna that transmits the signal to a broadband router inside the home. The cylinder-shaped antenna is installed at the customer's home, and the product's design includes multiple internal antennae allowing the device to pick up Verizon's 4G LTE signal.

The broadband router can connect up to four wired and at least 20 wireless devices inside the home using Wi-Fi..."

_______

And md, thanks, we did buy one of the booster/antenna combinations and are also planning to try that. It'd be helpful to have good signal on our phones (in the winter, I guess with the leaves off the trees, we get 2-3 bars on our cell phones there). But if this works, we'd have a real viable internet option...

Currently though Verizon's 4G LTE Network doesn't appear to reach out in Rockwood, TN which is what this "Home Fusion" product will run on. There EVDO 3G does appear to be available.

To clarify, Knoxville and surrounding areas already have Verizon's 4G LTE Network available its just the 4G LTE towers don't extend out to Rockwood, TN. Verizon's 4G LTE is already available here for the smartphones, tablets, data cards, just not this new fixed solution "Home Fusion" yet..

Aye, but it's a step in the right direction! lol at least there's hope.

Coolman, the EVDO 3G, is that something that helps on home-based internet, or is it just for cell phones?

Our only hope thus far has been to get a booster/antenna setup that allows us to get strong cell signal and work from one of those myfi gadgets. I presume that's what you're talking about?

I'm spoiled; we've got verizon fios here in NJ and that's going to be just about all I'll miss from this area.

And bagels.
