My husband's job is taking him to the Newport area--with the new hospital change. We were thinking of renting there for a while, but in looking at the threads, I'm a bit afraid to now!! What about Sevierville? Is it a friendlier place? Better for kids? Less crime? Thanks for any info!

Sevier County isn't bad with crime. With it being a tourist place, even if there was, they keep it out of the papers so they don't scare them off. Great homey place. Friendly and in my opinion better than Pigeon Forge. Sevierville has more land to offer and more of business jobs and not tourist "gift shop" jobs. The school systems in Sevierville and Pigeon Forge are terrible for kids. I went to Pigeon Forge and since 2006 it has gotten worse with the kids and the teachers have slacked on their job (my mom works there). Sevierville High school is always the one school in our county that has the most pregnant girls. But it is better compared to some schools. Actually education wise, Sevierville High would be better than Pigeon Forge. But this was when I was in school and knew all the kids. I still know of kids in school and hear the issues going on with both schools. Sounds the same. Again, better schools than some out there.
Renting in Sevierville can run you from 500 to about 900 a month. Most of the apartments here are not animal friendly- sucked on our part when finding one for our dog. We have a nice library here for kids- just built last year and it's HUGE! Nice park systems in both Pigeon Forge and Sevierville.
Overall, Sevier County is a great place to raise kids. I would never be afraid to walk to streets late at night here. I am completely comfortable and safe while living here.

Where do you live now? If your husband is going to commute from Sevierville to Newport everyday you should be aware of the windy road that is only 2 lanes. If you get behind a slowpoke it is a long drive. During wintertime it can be a challenge on occasion.

Sevierville proper is a nice place with nice people. There are issues there like anywhere. And the tourist industry can make getting around difficult at times. With good parenting and involvement a child can do well in the schools.
