Great descriptions of Memphis and Nashville.

Knoxville is completely different than those two cities in multiple ways. The downtown core is tiny but lovingly restored, vibrant, homey. Stand in the middle of Market Square on a Friday evening and not one demographic group stands out. There are babies, children playing in the water fountains, in the park, teens, students, entire families, young couples, oldsters, hipsters, tourists, blue-collar and white collar, and the homeless with musical instruments. And dogs, always dogs.

It has to be one of the most democratically social places on earth, a true slice of Americana.

Duckluck, I'm confused. Do you want to be around hipsters or avoid them? Because some of the best places for living carfree will have hipsters. There are exceptions but we might have to think a while to find them. Then again, if you plan to go carfree the first thing to consider is where is your job.

If you're looking to go car-free in any city in TN, it's pretty unrealistic, unless you live downtown in Knoxville, Nashville, and Memphis and took a cab for special trips. But have a feeling you'll be cabbing a lot...

I dunno, you could live in one of the complexes around westtown and have a grocery, restaurants, bars, and a TON of stores. Get a job near the #10 bus line and you'd be good to go. That may be the best choice for someone wanting to be car and hipster-free.

Looking for more info about Knoxville area...while Tennessee is really a cultural shock for hubby(from NYC), it's much easier for me to adapt. I am more 'conservative' while he is more 'urban' so I would love a lifestyle that matches both our lives- a little of both...Have kids under 12, homeschool, moderate conservative, christian, diversity...any hispanic (PR) population? Looking for big city feel, shopping, fun family entertainment, mild weather....lived in FL, too hot all year round, need change of seasons. Currently live in E. TN (Paris)- too rural
Would like a decent area to live, home rental for a 3 bdrm around 700...any feedback would be appreciated : )

Actually, Paris, Tn. is in "West" Tennessee, not East Tennessee. Knoxville is in East Tennessee, big difference.

As weisgarber1 said, Paris TN is in West Tennessee, not East Tennessee.

Knoxville does have some diversity, but there's not much of a Hispanic community here. According to the 2010 Census, Knox County is 3.5% Hispanic, which means we have about 15,000 Hispanics. Otherwise, Knoxville does have everything else you're looking for.

If you want to be in a fairly urban area with the qualities you want plus a larger Hispanic community, check out Nashville which has, according to the 2010 Census, about 60,000 Hispanics.

Our schools are not very politically correct, either.

That home rental price may be doable but I'd plan on paying a little bit more. West Tennessee is very inexpensive. So is Knoxville, relatively speaking, but out west is one of the cheapest places in the country to live. Of course pay is probably going to be a tiny bit more, too, with far more opportunities.

Our city is very small, especially the downtown area, but it is beautifully restored and vibrant. It would be about the size of a NYC block, though. Lots of shopping opportunities throughout Knox County, though. Lots of things to do, many free.
