Need a getaway
I live in middle Tennessee, and I am thinking about going to Knoxville for a weekend just to get away from everything. I was curious about what the city has to offer as far as educational places and activities that can be enjoyed alone as well as others. I'm always up for meeting interesting people.

I highly recommend the Hilton as a great place to stay. We stayed there for one night during Boomsday.
The cost was $139 for the room. We did the valet parking, ate in the pub upon arrival, ordered room service that night, including a rib eye, and had breakfast the next morning.
The total came to $288, which is a steal, for two adults and one child.
They were incredibly nice folks, too.

Hotel St. Oliver on Market Square. Small boutique hotel with great prices.
Hotel St Oliver - Knoxville, TN
You can walk or take the free trolley to all the great things downtown has to offer.
Just don't plan to come on a weekend when the Vols are playing at home! They're away on the Sept. 15, October 13 and October 20, so those would be good weekends.
Pick up a copy of Metro Pulse, the free weekly, to see what's going on.
Metro Pulse Online
There's wine tastings at Oodles, live music in the Old City, plenty of art galleries and browsing to do on Market Square, see a show or concert at the Tennessee Theatre or the Bijoux. Tomato Head does a great brunch.

Bed and Breakfasts in Knoxville?
How about any B & B's in Knoxville? Do either of you know of any? I tried to google, but the ones listed are all out of town (probably for the Smoky tourists).
We have had some great stays in nice B & B's. We would like to try one in Knoxville when we are up in October.
Thanks, y'all.

Great, knoxgarden, I posted too soon! The Hotel St. Oliver website looks like a large B & B. It really looks nice. We just have to pick a weekend that is not a UT game weekend.
We missed the Tomato Head again this past visit!!!! Arrgh. Will definitely go there next month. Hiknapster, I think you had told me several weeks ago that they are now serving dinner, too. Is that right or was it just for the summer?
Thanks to both of you for the tips.

I do not. Someone else might have some info.
The Brimer House Inn was suppose to be very nice. Last I heard, it was up for sale. I just tried to call their number, because their website is still operational, but the phone was disconnected.
Maplehurst has always had horrible reviews. Best to avoid. I don't really know of any others, and I am a member of Trip Advisor.

No. That wasn't me. I was the person wandering around downtown last Monday and wondering where all the people were. I still don't have a handle on the downtown scene. I am sure I hit the area at a down time.
Besides that, I am old, with a child. What the heck do I know?
But I really did like the Hilton. It is an older establishment that is decent. Who the heck would expect to pay those prices at the Hilton? I thought it was great.
But I am not the "go-to" person for what is going on in the city. I am still trying to make my way.

St. Oliver has a B&B atmosphere. It's great because you can walk or take the trolley places.
If you want B&Bs in East Tennessee, there's a really interesting one in Mooresburg, The Old Home Place.
The Home Place Bed & Breakfast - Mooresburg (Rogersville area), Tennessee - BBOnline.com / Introduction
Unlike a lot of B&Bs that are old houses that newcomers bought, this one has been in the same family since it was built back in the 1800s. Not much to do near there, except visit Rogersville and relax. It's like taking a trip back in time.
There is a great B&B in Historic Rugby. That's a wonderful place for a weekend getaway.
Historic Rugby, Tennessee
Christmas time is particularly good there. Like stepping into a Victorian Christmas card.

Thumbs up on Rugby Area
My favorite B&B in Rugby is The Grey Gables Inn. Linda and her husband, Bill, are wonderful people and provide a great respite. Staying in that area allows you to take day trips to Muddy Pond, Allardt, Pall Mall (home of General Alvin York), etc. Linda is one of the best cooks I have ever met. Plan on buying her cookbook (cookbook #2 is due out anyday). One of the physicians I work with has a retreat house in Rugby. That's how special the area is.
If you go to the homeplace of General York you can meet his son who serves as a park ranger. Very neat talking with him!
Grey Gables B&B Inn: Welcome
We are B & B fans and love them!
