The reason Lowes does that is because it was founded by the Ex-wife of the Home Depot creator and it's their mission in life to put one as close as possible to any HD built to stick it to them. Works pretty good doesn't it?

Interesting theory, but not true.

That's not true. Lowe's was founded in 1946, Home Depot didn't get started until 1979.

Then someone lied to your wife. I can't imagine why they would do that. I remember seeing Lowe's when my family first moved to Tennessee in 1976. Home Depot didn't get started until 1979, and for years it was only in Atlanta. You can go to their web sites to see the history of the two companies.

Tremendous growth in 10 years time.
Home Depot's growth must have been phenomonal! My oldest son started working there his senior year in high school to help with college expenses. That was 1988 in Southgate, Michigan.
This HD in Southgate was built about 2 years prior - around 1986 -87. It wasn't long before several others sprang up in the area. David worked at one in Ann Arbor his senior year at U-M in '92.
Quite a growth rate. They certainly found a niche in the home remodelers' market.
It seems to me that the market can certainly be well served with two similar companies. But, it does appear that Lowes' intent is to move in the same area as a successful HD (within a mile or two) to capture the market. If this stadegy is not meant to put the other company out of business then I am greatly mistaken.
If I were in control of Lowes' store locations I would find the peripherial edge of HD's customer base and build my Lowes there.

Sorry, Suzanne1945. It's tangent time again!
Costco will admit to nothing, nor will they deny that they might be locating a warehouse in Knoxville. Therefore, everything goes awry, including the Costco thread!
Tell us something nice about Costco, Suzanne, and we'll get back on track, ok?
