Hi everyone!

We (cat, husband, me, in priority order!) are seeking to relocate to beautiful TN. Husband was born and grew up in Knoxville; I have visited a number of times. I am a city girl (Chicago, DC, Tampa areas) who always dreamed of retiring to the Great Smoky region. Husband has visited Lynchburg, so he suggested moving there. Cat just wants to get out of the heat. I want someplace quiet, less expensive, but in the 21st century (or thereabouts). Husband and I are both disabled, so we aren't able to do a lot of scouting, outside of what we can read. Cat is unemployed and indifferent. I am hoping to hear from the experts as to the pros and cons of the two areas.

Many thanks to all who (hopefully) answer!

Are you going to be looking for jobs? Besides peace and quiet, what else are you looking for? Since you and your hubby are both city folk, do you also want to be near a larger city? How about nightlife, restaurants, shopping, concerts, things like that? Do you have a price range for your new home? And are you looking for acreage?

There are many places in Tennessee that are beautiful and that have reasonably-priced housing. I haven't been to Lynchburg very much, but it really is cute. Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding House has the most amazing food. It's almost worth living in Lynchburg just to be able to eat there all the time.

My cats are very happy in Knoxville. Lots of birds and lizards and squirrels to watch. Even an occasional bunny hops by. For condo living, it's a good deal.
There are decent handicap services in Knoxville and very good medical services. UT is a teaching hospital and there are other large medical centers in the area.
People are usually good about leaving the handicap parking spaces open.
KAT (Knoxville Area Transit Authority) has good programs for the handicapped, including discounted fares and a door-to-door bus if required.
KAT - Knoxville Area Transit
At the Knoxville Airport, you can park free in short-term parking if you have a handicap tag or plate (they do check to make sure you're the one authorized to use it).
If you want to take classes at UT, they will do anything necessary to accommodate you.
There are some really nice condos around. You may want to look for places on the water downtown.
