Tennessee rates as having one of the lowest overall tax burdens in the country. Around number three from the bottom, depending upon who you ask. Retirees, quite a few of whom do have investments they live off of, get the raw end of the tax deal with something called the Hall Tax. It's a personal income tax levy of 6% on certain investment income. It may be possible to rearrange your portfolio to minimize the tax. You can find all about it at Tennessee.gov.

The state has a nominal registration fee, but no annual vehicle tax. Some counties have their own vehicle tax. The local term for it is Wheel Tax.

Probably, the two most despised taxes in Tennessee are the Hall Tax and the Wheel Tax.

Default Sorry it took so long to get back!

Thanks for the welcome, folk!

Last Friday Art Walk continues to grow! In April, we had a reading of a Ray Bradbury story turned into a play. Something about Dandelions. It was held on the steps of the historic A.K. Harper Library Building (former Red Cross), now a gift shop called Dandy Lions. My son and granddaughter were performing in it, while I was downstairs in the ArtSpace Gallery (home of Fine Arts Blount).

BTW, the Daily Times newspaper office had a fire today, but they hope to have the paper ready in time for morning delivery!

It was a gorgeous day here today; tonight we're supposed to get some rain.

artmom - glad to see you come back to visit! I am glad that all is well, despite the fire, at The Daily Times.

I know I am very glad I found this forum. Being middle aged, and single it is scary just picking up and moving by myself. I have gathered so much info about the area. Really looking forward to my visit in July. Thinking I will stay in the Kodak area. I already have two job interviews lined up. Any contacts I've had over the phone have been nice. I've done a lot of research on my own of different area's to move to and TN. always comes in first. I belong to EONS and did their retirement quiz of most likely place for me to retire and again TN., won out. Why wait till I retire go for it now

Artmom, that was such a fun post to read! It sounds like you have lived in TN all your life.

It's nice to see you and the family so active in the community. Glad you're back. (Isn't Dandy Lions a great name for a gift shop?)

Just dandy!

I've always thought it would be fun to have a shop called The Flying Pig, filled with all sorts of unusual things and curiosities. But then maybe someone already has???

Does that come from the "you can't put lipstick on a pig" saying or is it from "when pigs fly?"

That would be from the "when pigs fly" scenario.

I am also partial to "pearls before swine." I see a lot of that in my line of work.

Not to forget the "Can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!" One of my dad's favorites that I think he used when referring to his errant daughter!

The Sow's Ear-- I like that! And you could put silk purses in an array of spring colors in the window.
