Question Friends visiting Knoxville--where to take them?

Having lived in Knoxville for 3 years with young kids, most of the places we go are either parks or kids-oriented places. Any suggestions on places to bring friends to visit for their stay in Knoxville?

Thank you!

What do they like to do and what kind of place do they come from?

If they're readers, take them to McKays. Few places have such a great second hand bookstore.

The UT Botanical Gardens are lovely and all the children can run around without a problem.

The zoo is good unless they are accustomed to a larger one.

There's the professional baseball team.

Market Square can be fun on a cool evening.

They came from the Midwest and they like sightseeing. They have been to the Smokey Mountains many times already, but not familiar with the city of Knoxville. Since they don't have kids, I hope to take them to places which adults will enjoy as well. Both are avid readers so I truly appreciate your suggestion of McKays.

Union Ave bookstore downtown may interest them as well. This stop could be included along with an evening in Market Sq. Enjoy a nice restaurant followed by gelato or a coffee.

Also, in the Old City neighborhood, a new addition that may be of interest. A winery.

I agree with this! Our downtown is small but wonderful. Take in Union Avenue, Market Square, Gay Street and the Old City. Visit the East Tennessee History Museum. It's on Gay. We have a very small but charming art museum at World Fair's Park. The McClung Museum is small but fascinating as well, at UT. We also have two boat sightseeing tour outfits. One is the Volunteer Princess and the other is a riverboat. It will give them a chance to see Volunteer Landing.

Another fascinating store that recently opened:

If they like old buildings, check out Blount Mansion, James White Fort and the Mabry-Hazen house. Maybe a walking tour of the historic neighborhoods.

Nature lovers will enjoy Ijams. The boardwalk along the river and Ross Quarry are both really unique. For a birds-eye view of Knoxville, park across from the water tower on Cherokee trail and follow the trail out to the bluff.
