My weight seems to be an issue for employers, no matter how qualified I am to do the job. This is disheartening for me! Will I be facing this when I relocate to Knoxville? I know you guys can't tell me for sure but I was hoping maybe you could tell me your experiences with employers in the area at interview/application time.

Nope. I can't ever see that happening.

Let's put it this way, there are a lot of very overweight people in East Tennessee. I suspect that it may have something to do with the diet, or perhaps the lack of money to buy quality food. It could also just be the culture. It doesn't seem to have the stigma that it has in other places.

Well, this is pure speculation on my part. I'm probably way off base; won't be the first time.

Bear in mind, that I was fairly thin until I moved to East Tennessee, and have since gained about 45 pounds that I can't seem to take off. Of course, I've had health issues, so that may have played a part in not being successful at dieting. On the other hand, I may be sick because I am now overweight.

Anyhow, no, I can't imagine an employer discriminating against you for being overweight.

Now, they may pick someone else because they are a local. That would be more of a concern.

I would tend to agree with hiknapster (I seem to do that a lot, lol). Being local will earn you big points -- and in some cases (though not all, of course), nepotism runs rampant.

Ucandoit, it seems that your forum moniker says it all. You think you can do it and you can. We all hate rejection and all have fears about some aspect of ourselves when trying to land a new job.

Like TedTAce says, "patience pays." Great attitude and I think you have the same one! You're one step ahead already!

Keep us posted on your progress. You'll do just fine.

ucandoit, as a peraon that is what I call "JUBBY" my attitude is like this, if they would not hire me based solely on my weight, I would not want to work for them. I guess I really think that a persons work record, educational and training, and a good work ethic should be way more important then the size of a person. This is just my opinion. I guess I would have a hard time respecting a boss that just thinks about what he sees with his eyes, and not with his mind. Be proud of the person you are and the qualifications you have, you will get a great job. Best of Luck to you!
