Default Harriman, TN

Hello,

I am considering moving from Memphis, TN to take a job in Harriman, TN. Can anyone tell me anything about this city or any good surrounding cities that would be nice to live for a young, single professional. Thanks!

Well, I'm old-ish and widowed, so I'm primarily interested in medical and shopping facilities, and a peaceful environment. For me, the Harriman, Kingston, Rockwood area is a great place to be. If an active nightlife is important to you, you might be happier living on the west side of Knoxville, which is an easy commute from Harriman...and when you'd be driving to and from work, the heavier traffic would be going in the opposite direction.

Frank

We just bought a small lot on the Loudon/Kingston border (in Kingston, outside the city limits). Love the area--

This thread chronicles our search for the right area for us. We wanted rural environment but within a half hour or so commute to the west knoxville area (hubby works for a company that has an office on cherahala blvd.).

This thread has tons of pictures of, well, nothing really--but for us it's the stuff you want to get a feel for as you're just routinely driving down the road. We just wandered around and I kept snapping pictures out the car window. Might be helpful.

We liked Roane County in general! It has a traditional feel and while not perfect (there are some run-down areas, but for us, we're sick of NJ's "keeping up with the joneses" so that wasn't a big deal) the people were very nice and there were tons of areas that could have been right for us!

I see sooo much potential in Harriman, they have wonderful affordable Victorian houses and the mountains are right across from downtown. But it does seem sleepy.

With the price of gas and all you might consider living in Harriman but looking for a room to rent in Knoxville on the weekends. Someone out there has a spare bedroom and needs help with the mortgage payments. Try "wanted to rent" on Craigslist.

I would recommend living in W. Knoxville. This keeps you 25 minutes from Harriman and 25 minutes from Downtown. There is just so much more for you to do in W. Knoxville and closer to town and typically it's better for you to be closer to your weekend/nightlife activities and drive a few extra minutes to work.
