MAy move to Knox--jobs and school for middle aged gal
Hi there! I'm from the gulf coast of Florida considering a reinvention of mysef! I'm in my late 40's and considering going to school in some kind of tech field--Multimedia, web development and design etc. and have received some info from ITT Tech in Knoxville--I would have to also work in the restaurant business to support myself. My question(s) is does anyone know if someone my age would be able to find a decent restaurant position as a server or bartender (I have many years previous experience in good establishments) and would the private school be the best way to go OR I also noticed that Pellissippi State Technical College has some of these programs for an associates degree AND THEN, is there demand for employment in Knoxville for this kind of field?
I was in Knoxville last month and really liked it but want to check out further opportunities. IS it true all the younger college kids get the jobs? I have a very strong work ethic--Most of my life has been in the restaurant industry and the rental/property managment and real estate sales in Florida--but ready to make some MAJOR changes! Any comments, suggestions would be appreciated!

I don't think you'd have any trouble finding a job at a restaurant. I think a lot of college kids work there because they're available. I've seen many older wait staff, particularly in the more expensive places. I can't think of a restaurant I've been to or gone by that doesn't have a "hiring" sign out front.
Before signing on with ITT, check into the Tennessee Technology Center in Knoxville, Pellissippi State and even UT for classes. They may be more affordable.

Thank you for the valuable information--do any particular restaurants come to mind that hire a more mature group like myself? I'll check out the other schools--I also have an opportunity to get my degree online--that's costly too, but what isn't?

I've seen more mature wait staff at most restaurants. Puelos, Bogartz, Copper Cellar, Calhouns, Ye Olde Steak House are all local. Plus we have all the chains: OCharley's, Cracker Barrel, Applebees, Outback, etc.
UT offers online IT training and certificates.

Along with restaurants you might want to consider working at one of the country clubs in town. Try Fox Den and Gettysvue.

Good info--and another for you Housejunkie: I am a real estate broker in Sarasota, FL and thinking I might as well get my R.E. license up there since our states have reciprocity. How is your market right now?
