Default Still like Knoxville

Hi again- I was recently a victim of "restructuring" and am now looking for work. I've always wanted to try Knoxville, but was informed several times that basically if you aren;t local, forget it. I'm a midlevel professional not looking to make millions, just want a decent living in an area I like. Can anyone tell me any local headhunters, or recruiters I could contact there?
Also, what is the employer attitude there? for example, here in SE WI, most companies want the most way overqualified people for minimal pay. A lot of employers here view their workers as disposable commodities, as opposed to real human beings. I'd like to think that in the South, esp TN, that that is more the exception. I realize business are there to make money, but without good people, that can;t happen.

Thanks for any input or advice- I do hope someday I can become a fellow Knoxvillian liek Milwaukee's faveortie son, Bruce Pearl.

Let me tell you, Bruce Pearl is definitely one of Knoxville's favorite citizens right now. It's fun to have big crowds now at men's basketball games as well as women's games. The AP has the men's bball team ranked #7 in the nation right now. Bruce could probably run for any political office he wants to in Knoxville right now.

As far as headhunter agencies around here, maybe others can offer better suggestions, but I'd start by looking at the big national agencies like manpower or randstad and also by perusing the local paper, www.knoxnews.com

The Knoxville area has a lot of federal jobs because of Oak Ridge and TVA. You might check with them, depending on what you want to do.

Most smaller businesses around here probably would prefer to hire a known commodity (a local) than someone they feel might be using this area as merely a stepping stone for bigger and better paying jobs in bigger cities. And that's not an attitude that is peculiar to Knoxville, either.

Don't forget that are also several hundred college graduates every year here who also want to live and work in Knoxville, so you're up for some stiff competition. Again, the big federal agencies here might be somewhat immune to that since they tend to hire on a national scale and not just local.

I'm afraid I can't be too optimistic, though, since it would be very difficult to get a job here unless you actually live here first. But since it would be very difficult to move here unless you actually have a job here, it does put you in kind of a Catch-22 situation.

But best of luck to you anyway. I happen to like it here a lot, so I hope you're able to come here and love it, too!
