We are planning on moving to the Maryville or eastern Blount County area sometime in 2014.

We have been watching on-line real estate for the last 24 months and have visited the area many times in the last 6 years.

I am seeking recommendations for home builders for a 2,400 square foot home plan that we like. We want to compare the cost of building to the existing real estate market. It would be great if contributors could post both recommendations from personal experience as well as second hand knowledge.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Why don't you buy an existing house? More environmentally responsible...

That isn't the main criteria for everyone who wants a house, obviously, nor should it be, though it might be a consideration for some.

We could spend all day debating the environmental impact of building a new energy efficient home versus buying an older home. We haven't made a decision what to do but wanted to compare a new home, built to our needs against buying an existing home.

I am surprised not to get a response to my original question - anyone??

I am not a builder, but I work with several builders in greater Knoxville. If you buy in a subdivision, you'll most likely have to use the builder that builds in that development.

If you're building on your own lot, small builders are pretty busy right now. The usual word of mouth is your best bet. I would be happy to make a few suggestions if I knew your price range per sf (i.e. how custom a house, style, etc).

We would be building a 2,400 square foot house and our total cost including land would have to be under $325,000. My thought was to get recommendations and then meet with 3 or 4 builders to determine cost and feasibility. We are looking for a lot around 1/2 acre.

We want to determine the cost of building what we like new versus buying an existing home. We are not in a big hurry as we are retired.

Thanks for any builder recommendations!

Might I suggest a Modular Home? Not "mobile home" but Modular built in sections then placed on the foundation with a crane.
We're looking at them, financed the same as a site built house, a bit tougher construction as they have to survive the ride on a flatbed to the site and many custom options from stories to elevation to basic construction (2x4 vs 2x6).
There are several of these type homes in the Loudon area.
