NYC is a lovely place to visit, but I couldn't imagine living there. I think you made the best decision by at least moving south. Knoxville is a lovely town with tolerable traffic, rolling hills, affordable housing and the gorgeous Smoky Mountains National Park just about 40 minutes away. If you want to ask me anything about the area or other areas just send a reply or message.

I've never been to NYC, but I've met some folks from there. I think you're in for some culture-shock. You probably already know that. K-town isn't neccessarily a bad place to live, but I plan to try some other place when it's convenient. Don't let my *****ing discourage you, lots of folks really like it here. West Knoxville is by far the best area if you can afford it. Here's a list of my own personal pros and cons about knoxville and the surrounding areas.
Pros: low cost of living, low taxes, lots o' jobs (I've switched jobs a lot, and it has never taken me more than a week to find a new one), lots of nice lakes and parks, usually mild temperatures (it rarely gets extremely hot or cold here), relatively light traffic, relatively cheap colleges, pretty good public schools (with a few notable exceptions).
Cons: Too much rain (which entails humidity, mud, mosquitos, rust, constant mowing, and lots of other nasty stuff), baptists everywhere (get ready to see random crosses and "jesus is watching you" signs. I'm not kidding), inbred hillbillies (rates of inbreeding and crank cooking increase exponentially the farther you get from the city limits), most jobs here don't pay much, the orange hoards (aka Volfans), almost nonexistant public transportation and sidewalks (if you want to go anywhere, you MUST drive), Boss Hog style politics, Bushbots
Here's the best advice I can offer to a New Yorker who is moving to knoxville: Avoid any discussion of religion, politics, or football.

Brandon,
I'm wondering what the best neighborhoods are in Knoxville?
Which are the areas to stay out of because of crime or what-have-you?
Thanks

Hi D,
My wife and I moved to Knoxville approximately 2 years ago and we love it. Job market is stable. Forbes had an article recently that said that Charlotte to Nashville and south to Atlanta is the new "corporate triangle". Meaning there are many corporate headquarters in this triangle. The schools are pretty good also. The quality of life is really great. There are plenty of outdoor activities (lakes, hiking, etc) along with the VOLS football games and Lady Vols basketball. EVERYONE is a Vols fan! You would want to be in west Knoxville ideally for your kids' schools. Our home is a great new subdivision close to shopping and easy access to the interstate. We are currently selling our home and looking for one with a basement. Hope this helps!

Farragut is the place to be
Farragut is a great place to be. You are 15 minutes from everything. Look into that area. You will end up moving there once you see all the benefits that town has to offer.

If you and your husband are planning to relocate to Knoxville from nyc I'll give you my sons email and you can ask any questions, he lived there for many years.I must warn you he loves NYC, maybe you can talk him in to moving back! Ha! his email is cmiller05@nyls.edu

We moved from WI about 2 years ago to Maryville (about 15 minutes south of Knoxville). It's been a great move. But if you are a die-hard Democrat and/or a Lutheran, east TN is not the place to move - you will be in the vast minority.
There are great small communities just minutes away from Knoxville. You will find taxes less in these small towns and whenever you want to enjoy what Knoxville has to offer...all roads lead to Knoxville in the area.
