Moving to Knoxville- We hope!
My husband and I are hoping to move to Knoxville this spring or summer. We have 2 young children and are looking for a great place to raise our family. My husband will be working on the west side of town, but is willing to commute a little if necessary. We are looking to buy or build a home at around the $200k price. From looking online, we are finding subdivisons that appear decent in a few areas: Strawberry Plains, Gibbs and Fountain City, however we don't know much about these areas. Can anyone tell me anything (good or bad) about these areas? Do you know of any other areas we may want to look into? Thanks so much for your help!

While awaiting responses you might want to go to the Search feature above and type in each area and read past posts. There is a wealth of information that has already been shared on this board regarding the areas you mentioned.

Interview the school systems and find out which one fits what you are looking for and also do a search (as mentioned above). Also, Strawberry Plains to the west side of town is a hike.

Gibbs is a bit of a hike too...I lived there while working in West Knox. Depending on where your hubby will work, you're looking at 20-40 min drive from Gibbs.
If you're looking for a newer home, there are tons of subdivisions that will be priced under $200K--even West Knox. You'll probably get a bigger house, but a longer commute in Fountain City, Powell, etc. $200K buys quite a bit here in Knoxville... Land for building a $200K or less house is scarce in Knoxville--your best bet is Fountain City or Powell for that... West Knox only has about 3 good pieces of land priced under $40K right now to build on...that only leaves you $160K to build and for closing costs... My brother-in-law is a builder and husband is a contractor...materials have shot up and land prices have shot up.
Have you been here before? If not, you really need to come. Tour these communities, as each one offers something different..I can't really comment on which area's are good and which ones are bad...what is "good" for you might not be so desirable for me, and something that is "bad" for you may be just fine for me... I suggest driving around, getting a feel for the community, your commuting time for shopping/dining/schools/dr offices/work and then picking an area.

Haijari, congrats on you possibly moving to Knoxville. I agree, Gibbs and Staw Plains is probably 30 to 40 minute drive thru the rush of downtown. You can go to Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed
city data, and get all the school information you want. If you want convienience, then you might consider the far west of county, also Loudon area, and even parts of Blount county. Good luck and come on down, and join the Big orange.
