Is that the neighborhood where the old elementary school is being (hopefully) renovated into condos? I can't remember the name of the school. Anyway, if that's the neighborhood you're talking about, you're right on, and I hope that neighborhood will continue to develop the way you've described.

I think you mean Brownlow School.

That's it! Gosh I hope they renovate that thing. An old elementary school in Memphis was made into condos, and it is spectacular. And in East Knoxville, Old Park Junior High was renovated in the 1980s into luxury condos called Park Place, and holy cow it's amazing. Soundproofed interior walls, gigantic windows, sturdy floors, exposed brick, beautiful architectural details, spacious parking and lawns, even athletic fields. The Old North neighborhood in Knoxville can definitely benefit from a renovated Brownlow School.

Brownlow is across Broadway in Fourth & Gill. That's a little more gentrified and a bit lower crime rate but no unified commercial district.

They do have Sassy Ann's blues bar on one end and Domino's pizza and the 3 rivers Food co-op on the other, is the Italian restaraunt still open?. The other businesses on Broadway are carpet stores and insurance agencies and the like. I keep waiting for Hall of Fame to get developed commercially now that it has an interstate exit, who knows?

Oh yes, Park Place is beautiful. I've read that the developers are planning to go forward with Brownlow despite a disappointing auction. So you may soon see it developed as well.

[quote=JMT;2532585]I worked for SAIC in Oak Ridge for a while and got to see what all is in the soil around there. I also had to sign a pledge that I would never reveal what I saw. So I can't say. But trust me, you don't really want to play in the dirt around there.

JMT, you signed a pledge to whom? To a former employer? If you actually know of contaminants or poisons in the soil, isn't it your responsiblity to let the public know this? Couldn't you be held liable if you have admitted that you know about this, yet refuse to notify the authorities?

You actually would cover up a public health hazard to protect a former employer who has done something illegal?

I think I am missing something here.

Vicki

You are...unless you have worked with a security clearance, you wouldn't know what there is or isn't.
The worker bees are only given the information that is necessary, ie we really don't know anything

That is a terrific idea. Most old schools are built like tanks! They would make wonderful condos. Talk about recycling. This would be a boon to the neighborhood and to many folks who would enjoy living in a sound, spacious old building.

Count me in!!
