My wife started a job here a month ago making 20% more than she did in Dallas, she does the same thing, has a more flexible schedule, and gets much better benefits/vacation/etc.

Sounds like you got burned somehow and rather than being adult about it decided to turn your anger towards everyone in Knoxville.

Isn't a barking spider what people say to try to pass off a fart sound? (around here we say "Did you hear that buck snort?" or "Yikes, I just stepped on a duck!")

"Did you hear that? Those darned barking spiders!"

Default Spiders that bark

Yes that is what a barking spider is. I used to spend a lot of time hiking and climbing at higher elevations (above 12K) and the altitude seemed to bring it out of us. It became a running joke with my friends.

When I was signing up for this site the name I wanted to use was taken, so I just picked that out of the air - (no pun intended, well maybe a little).

We always heard, "Who just stepped on a duck?" also, bbkaren.

That is until my third son came along. He would cry when he was little that he didn't want to step on a duck because it would hurt the duck!

So, for him we changed it to "Did somebody just pick a flower?" Picking flowers was right up his alley!

Now, the four of them together step on every "fowl" thing they can manage!

Ya know, did any one consider that the OP never specifically said knoxville and could have posted this message in every city data forum?

Hooray for trolls!

agraygirl: I think you might be right about the OP being a troll; though he/she did say the warning was to those planning to relocate to Knoxville specifically. I checked the profile and the OP has only made 8 posts and the ones the week before this one referred to moving to New Mexico and the one the week after this post referred to just selling his/her home in Alaska and planning to move to New Mexico.......so this Knoxville post and the posts looking for a 'southern guru' and 'slamming' Knoxville and stating that Knoxville was their 'new home', seem to be totally random!! All of these posts were made in an 18 day time period. Sounds kinda 'fishy' to me!!

Hi There.
You sound like me in a lot of ways.
I so missed "my people" in the snow belt that all I could see about people here is the ugly stuff. But after 9 months and 2 moves, I'm trying to work through it.
Yes, I believed the "hype" about southern charm myself. And it simply isn't true. Once I was able to put my anger aside I began to really examine my old life in the snowbelt and my new life here. What I realized is that people are basically the same where ever you go. The difference is, at home, I had my family and the time (long history) to make the friends and connections that were suitable to my values and lifestyle. It took 38 years, obviously. Time is a luxury we transplants don't have. We need to throw down roots and get comfy and happy fast. But it doesn't work for us. I so wish it did.
I've been "in the house" for nearly 3 years. 2 of those at home and rest here. It began with a pregnancy and an unwanted relocation. Anger and depression are rough no matter where a person has to go through it, but at home with those who love is preferable to a phony "Oz".
I feel your pain. I guess I said it the long way but I do understand.

Try Florida or New England.

When are you leaving? Is there anything I can say or do to help you leave a little sooner?
hahahaha loved it
