My wife and I bought her first home in South Knoxville back in November. We are very pleased with things. Depending on how far down you go, you'll get out of the busy traffic of downtown. We like it because we came from small towns and it reminds us more of rural areas back home, but we're close to Wal-Mart and downtown. I work in Seveirville, so I just shoot down the Chapman Highway and am at work in no time. The misses works off of Broadway, so she's got a pretty straight shot too. We're pleased! I guess it all depends on your tolerance for the more rural livestyle. The homes are not as new or fancy as West Knoxville or some areas of Foutain City or Halls, but the atmosphere seems better. Think twice if you have children though. South Knoxville's schools are at the bottom of the list when the School Board gives out $$$ and the scores and learning suffer. The Chapman Highway always seems to have cars going in both directions, so for a business, I don't think you can go wrong. I guess it all depends on where it is. The Wal-Mart and Lowes are the city limits off the Chapman Highway. Anything past that is getting into the Seymour area and Blount County...then Sevier County and Sevierville. Good luck!

I agree with everything that was said. When I was looking for a house a couple of years ago closer to town than where I had been living (Kodak), I seriously considered South Knoxville. I really do like that area. This might sound dumb, but the ONLY reason I didn't buy a house in South Knoxville was because there's not a Target in that part of town. I know, I know, it probably seems silly, but I can't stand Wal-Mart. Otherwise, I love the older neighborhoods in South Knoxville (particularly Island Home), I like the convenience to downtown, U.T. and the Smoky Mountains, and I really appreciate the sense of community they have in South Knoxville. If only they had a Target...

As a Target employee, I think that sounds outrageously smart, JMT.

I had actually heard they were planning to build a Target in the same shopping center as the Lowe's and Goody's. Here's hoping! I hate going to East Towne!

I very partial to South Knoxville. Of course you have to do what you think is best for you, but in my opinion I think South Knoxville is an excellent place to invest in both a home and business. We need a few more visionaries to invest in our side of town - not necessarily the chain stores, but more along the lines of mom and pops to keep South Knox funky.

With the current growth downtown - and the future plans for the south waterfront and more growth planned for downtown - South Knoxville is going to be even better than it is today. You have to do the research looking forward to the next 5 years. Check out what plans the city has for the area.

Seems like folks are migrating west - even as far as Farragut and Lenior City - for the schools and the new housing developments. The chain stores are setting up camps out west as well. If a business can compete with the chain store competition, go west. But if you are looking to open a mom and pop type business, I would highly recommend South Knoxville. The city is focused on growing downtown! Thank goodness!! The next five years could potentially be exciting for South Knoxville given our close proximity to downtown (under 5 miles)!! I'm pretty excited about the possibilities!!

So I guess what I'm trying to say () is that while it may not look as impressive as West Knoxville to the naked eye today, just wait! I think you'd be smart to invest in South Knoxville today. Just depends on what kind of business you plan to open. And as far as a home... Absolutely! It's a great part of town to live in!!
