Excellent schools, besides Farragut?
Hi there!
I visited the area last weekend and really liked the Farragut area. Due to my husband working from home we can live anywhere. Are there any cities that have excellent schools within 45 minutes of Knoxville besides Farragut? I wouldn't mind living in the mountains. We are moving in two weeks, so I need suggestions fast! The other city we were thinking about relocating to was Asheville, NC. We plan on living in an apartment or a rental until we buy a home. Any ideas?

Can anyone tell me about Townsend, Pigeon Forge or Tellico Lake? We only went down Alcoa Hwy into Maryville and then turned around. I see that people love that area on this board and I wish I would have explored it more. It seemed a bit run down, but like I said we were on Alcoa Hwy and that is obviously a small percentage of a town!

Maryville does indeed have an excellent reputation - within the city limits though. Outside city proper the schools are still good, but just not a renowned.
Townsend I looked into and recall it being quite "set apart" from other areas. Seems to me there's mainly a couple of big gated communities there, which I'm not fond of, so we kept looking.
Pigeon Forge, I believe, gets enormous tourist traffic in the fair weather months; I would imagine it wouldn't be much fun to live there, but I've never been so I can't say for sure.
Lots of folks like Tellico Village (it's advertised in retirement areas - Florida, etc. - by Erik Estrada from the old CHIPS TV show), but I think it's mostly a retirement community and from what I've seen, the land prices are out of this world...
Here's a thread from our search (which started in Erwin and wound up with us buying property in Loudon/Kingston). There was a portion there where I was getting opinions on Townsend, plus a ton of other areas.

Since your husband works out of home and you can live anywhere, what made you pick Knoxville? Not that I think you made a mistake, I'm just curious why you picked Knoxville.
I agree that Maryville and Oak Ridge probably have the best school systems, but in order to take advantage of them you have to live in those cities, not out in the country. I'd personally rather live in Maryville than Oak Ridge, but I'm sure some of the Oak Ridge boosters in this forum can make a case for that city.

I just moved here. I like it (preface to....) however, I would move to Asheville over here in a heartbeat. I think it might be personal preference though, no hardcore facts.

Well, thank goodness. I was starting to feel like a jerk, because I wouldn't pick Knoxville, either.
