The Heartland Series
The Heartland Series is a local program about the people and the land of the local Apppalachian region and originally started profiling the Great Smoky Mountains. It is hosted by Bill Landry. It began in 1984 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The website has some clips of shows and a little more on the history of the show. They are currently selling Volume 28 of the Heartland Series. There have been over 1000 stories in the series so far. These "stories" are indeed very special and, in my personal opinion, will serve to be educational for their historical value in future generations. I am attaching a link to the website so folks can see some of the clips of this area for themselves.

Thanks, SmokyMtnGal. I love "A River's Course". Nothing as peaceful as the mountains and the view of the river. Wish I had satellite TV right about now.
(I ordered one of the DVD's, which I haven't received yet. This is a reminder to myself to call on Monday. )

Hmm, didn't we discuss this not long ago? I loooove Heartland! I also got to meet Bill once and hear him speak. What an intelligent, sentimental person.

My parents arrived in town tonight to watch the 30-minute Heartland Series show at 7:30. It was fabulous. Now my parents are dying to go to the Museum of Appalachia just to see the real wooden roofs that were made by the artisan featured in one of tonight's vignettes.
We have a lot to be thankful for, living in this beautiful part of the country, and the Heartland Series helps to discover even more hidden treasures around here. Thanks for the link!

Hi All,
Yes, we did discuss the Heartland series about a month ago...as a result, my husband and I have been taping it since. We absolutely love it! As newbies to TN and the South, it has been a wonderful primer, both for the culture and history of this wonderful area. When you set your tv to tape all showings, instead of just "new" ones, the repeats are also taped. Of course, they are all new to us.
Once again, this TN forum, proves it delightful and educational VALUE! Thank you everyone!

SMG, Thanks for researching the Heartland Series. I am one of those who missed the earlier discussion on the forum--so a big Thanks! This is just one more way for transplants like us to catch up on TN history past and present. Tried to rep you but I'm locked out again!

There is another series on Saturday nights on PBS. I think it's called TN Crossroads. We also enjoy that one very much. And, JMT, we've been to the M of A a couple of times already and love it. It hasn't gotten old or boring yet.

Hello, This thread prompted me to join the forum, so that I can hopefully get some information on the "heartland Series". I discovered this wonderful series several years ago on the Travel channel. I was fascinated with the series because I love the Appalachian mtns. and I study Appalachian culture, and old Appalachian ways of life. I immediately started recording the series each time it came on. Then suddenly, about a month after I discovered the program, it quit coming on and I haven't been able to locate the series anywhere else, since.
I have done net searches and found that it is broadcast out of Knoxville,Tn. I discovered that they have some of the series on DVD but each DVD is very expensive(totally out of my one horse budget!). I was wondering if it would be possible to get the broadcast via internet. I have tried to contact the TV station about this but they don't return my emails. If anyone knows how to get the series by internet please help me out with the info. I'm not extremely computer saavy so if I could receive the broadcast on my computer, I would probably need some help making the proper configurations.
By the way, my name is Mark and I live in Western Ky. just 15 minutes north of Clarksville,Tn. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Ya'll have a nice day! Thanks

Ol Pie... try calling 865-637-1010 and asking for their marketing director or assistant marketing director. If segments are available via internet, you might find them at www.wbir.com I believe they're all on a strictly paid basis, though.
