Alcoa Highway
This is one highway I did not care for visiting knoxville. In the morning and evening the traffic never stops, they need some stop lights somewhere so there's a break in traffic, I just know I do not wanna live anywhere where I'll have to travel on alcoa everday. lol

Only those of us with the nickname of Richard Petty truly appreciate driving Alcoa Hwy everyday. Everyday that I arrive at work via car vs medical helicopter I feel a sense of accomplishment!
Seriously, it can be a bear, but if you hang enough with it you figure out the ins and outs. And, keep this a secret, there are other backroads that you can use besides AH.

LOL I was telling my sis that there HAD to be a back road to take but she's new to the area too so she's clueless. Hmm, good to know!

It is really funny, but this is a great example of perspective, tn_dreamin'!
If you live in a large metro area Alcoa Highway feels like a country road!
If you are used to small town driving it looks like a blankety has broken out!
Just look at it as a challenge tn_dreamin' until you find all of the great back roads. It's a pretty drive in any case.

Oh Good Ole US-129. Death highway to some, Autobahn to others. It Seems like they need lights, but honestly it just needs better drivers. Keep out of the left hand lane you slow pokes!!

Yep! Didn't take me long to find them, either.
Once you've lived in Maryville for a while, you find the back roads and never have to deal with the traffic everyone always complains about.
Not to mention that some of those back roads have the most awesome views out there!

Isn't that the truth, TedTAce! It is scary going around one of those twisty bends and have another car coming toward you halfway in your lane!!

I am in total agreement on that BarbG. Even for someone who doesn't live in Maryville yet, exploring the back roads and taking other routes into Knoxville has shown us some dyn-oh-mite views!!

I really don't like the stretch by the airport because it seems you end up sitting for 5 minutes waiting to cross. Its a very cluttered stretch that is just begging for some kind of solution. Not sure what would work best. Personally, red lights would make it easier to cross and all, but would create massive back ups. Could use work, but I don't have to drive it much so it doesn't matter much to me.

That is a bad spot there, tnbound. If I were the civil engineer that was consulted to solve that spot, I would recommend clover leaf turns with lights. They would only need two lights in place. One set on the east side of the airport proper and one set on the west side.
It would tend to back up traffic on Alcoa Highway, but relieve the sudden screeches necessary to avoid hitting cars entering Alcoa Hgwy in fast moving traffic. Another lane wouldn't hurt either, but would be very expensive, at least a few mil $$.
BACK ROADS!!
