A friend emailed me these. Those of you who knows these locations will marvel at how much they've changed:

Thanks for posting! These pictures are the only time I have ever seen this stretch of I-40 in Knoxville without an orange barrel.

Seriously, amazing huh?

Per site (Les Jones - Archive with Oldest Posts First) they are 1960.

@ orange barrels. I used to make sport of hitting them, but they kept popping back up... like whack-a-mole!

Great pics! And it kind of makes me sad to see what West Knox used to look like, particularly West Hills. And in the Papermill picture, I don't see Northshore Drive anywhere. Ah for the good old days!

Unhappy Now you see it; now you don't!

Jabogitlu, I am unfamiliar with the before photos entirely, but I do love seeing them after experiencing the here and now from those areas.

The pictures were great to see as well as your friend's website. Very clever and fun. Thanks for sharing!!

I am fascinated by old photography. I loved seeing the way it used to be in the West Town Mall area. When I was a young man in the Air Force (1955-59) I remember traveling out old Highway 11-70 to pick up a friend at the old Dixie-Lee Junction while on the way to Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Ms. Things sure have changed since then. So sad to think of all the years gone by. I suppose I am a sentimental old fool, but I like the way things used to be when life was less complicated and stressful. Thanks for this trip down memory lane.

I took another peak at these, since I've lived her for a bit now and I'm even more familiar with the area. You know what stands out to me? Even back then the area was hazy; just part of living in the valley, I suppose. More industry back then, too, I imagine.

Great pictures! I can remember Campbell Station, Mabry Hood, Lovell, Cedar Bluff and Walker Springs roads being almost nothing but smaller stores, mom-n-pop and fast food joints.

West Hills/Bearden were semi-rural until sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s.

If you take a right off I40 westbound, my husband works just past the farmhouse.
Living on a historic farm as I do, I adore old photos of places I 'know'.
