bbkaren, I agree with hiknapster, while the rush hour traffic in Knoxville can be maddening, it's NOTHING like the garbage people have to put up with in Nashville, Atlanta, South Florida, DC, and probably NJ/NY. The state just finished widening I-40 just west of downtown Knoxville, so the traffic isn't that bad anymore (knock on wood).
And I think 9 days is long enough to get a feel for the area. The drive from Nashville to Knoxville is scenic, at least it's scenic from about Cookeville on (and be sure to honk your horn as you drive by my beloved Cookeville). Do some shopping while you're here, go into grocery stores, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, etc., just to see what the people are like. You don't even need to buy anything, just wander around and see if the people are friendly.
And if you have internet access while you're here, be sure to pop in every now and then and let us know how you're doing. I know hiknapster will be happy to answer your questions! (heh heh)
Good luck, and have a WONDERFUL trip!

how far is Cookville from Knoxville ? Is it far enough out to get more for your money but close enough if you had to go into Knoxville every day?

JMT is on vacation. He may make special appearances, but we won't have our reliable friend around for awhile. Y'all are stuck with me, and I don't know anything, especially about Cookeville.
I do know this, by checking the map...Cookeville is 103 miles away from Knoxville, or about one hour and 30 minutes.

Yep, we're in Crossville right now with a friend; he works in Knoxville toward the west end and it takes him an hour and a quarter to get to work--on odd hours (he works 12-10p.m.).

Actually, I made a mistake. The map said one hour and 40 minutes. He's either underestimating it or speeding.
Think about it. It's 103 miles away.
And here's the thing I don't get:
It's 81 miles to Nashville, which is still pretty bad, but at least the pay is better!

We are looking for a 'retirement' place in the Knoxville 'area'...which means a lot of flexibility. Are making another weekend trip there this weekend to look around. As we retire, this would be a place we would be primarily from October through April as we have a small home up north that we will be in warmer time of the year as we have 4 children there. Am finding it so hard to understand 'areas' etc...it does take time. We thought we might like the Halls Crossroads/Fountain City Area...but haven't heard much about Halls Crossroads that is bad or good. Haven't heard anything about Corryton. We are active and like the idea of being close to park or running trail and it seems impossible to find something where you can walk out of your home and go for a walk, jog, or bike ride on a trail etc. I am so appreciative of learning from everyone and wanted to share our interest. We look forward to benefitting from suggestions, and are glad to make our own observations as we learn. We may go to Lenoir City while there, and check on the east side around Strawberry Plains, and after reading about Daindridge, see what it's like. Sounds like it may have a nice downtown....does it have any shopping or is going to Kville required for that? Thanks again for everyones help!

As far as Dandridge goes, try putting that question in the main Tennessee forum, you might get more information.
There is nothing wrong with Halls or Fountain City. Check them out while you are here and see if that is what you are looking for. Also, I like Lenoir City. LOTS of parks and it's near the Tennessee River.
I wish you very a very safe travel experience.
