The temperature drop is supposed to be more of a "frost" than the hard freeze we had last year. You learn to hold off on planting tender plants until after April 15 in Knoxville. We do have these early April freezes.
One of the best places to buy plants -- not sure about roses -- are the area plant sales. I try to keep an up-to-date list on the Knoxville Plant Swap website.
Knoxville Plant Swap: East Tennessee Garden Events
Anyone interested in gardening in Knoxville -- roses or anything else -- needs to head to the University of Tennessee gardens and the Arboretum. Both are listed on the Events page above. There are incredible resouces and also wonderful places to spend an afternoon.
The UT gardens are trial gardens -- they test plants to see what's best for the area and publish lists of what does well here. Their first "walks" for 2008 start April 15. One at noon and one at 6 p.m. Both free. A chance to tour the gardens, find out what resources they offer and get questions answered.
They also offer courses throughout the year for home gardeners for a very small fee. There's usually some on rose gardening.
And don't miss Blooms Day. Three days of plant sales, plant seminars and demonstrations and fun events for the kids.

All great info, knoxgarden. Thank you!

And to think I can remember laying out in the sun in March when I was at UT. I don't remember pulling sweaters back out after Spring Break. But then, more than a decade or two in SoCal can sap your cold hardiness. I start to shiver when the temperature dips below 60. Below 50, I just stay inside and drink hot cocoa. I'm hoping my roses have a different attitude.

Well, I just got back from shopping. I refused to give in to the colder temps and wore my capri pants and sandals. I am now resting comfortably at Lakeshore.

Seriously, I have already had my winter coats dry cleaned and put up for the season. I guess I am back to layering tomorrow. (that is if I don't have to go to the ER for paybackfrostbite). I hate the wind part of cold. Ugh.

I guess I'll have to wear long pants with my short sleeve shirt tomorrow.

You should've called, SMG-- my neighbor could have given you a ride in her little red convertible.

Wonder how many t-shirts and sweatshirts one can one layer and still manage to waddle around? I hope my roses don't freeze, but I sure might. Brrr!

remember when Joey wore all of Chandler's clothes?

According to TWC, the coldest part of tonight (Sunday) will be 9:00 tomorrow morning - 38 degrees. Monday night will be a similar temp, but it should not go below 36. I guess I won't cover anything tonight; I will do the experiment tomorrow instead.

Looking at things right now, I expect only a very few areas to actually frost much less freeze.
