I'm afraid it'll never be finished. As soon as I-40 is "finished" in Knoxville the state will start "fixing" I-40 elsewhere (I use those terms loosely). They're talking about making it 6 lanes (3 in each direction) all the way between Nashville and Knoxville. First up is adding truck lanes between Cookeville and Monterey and also between Rockwood and Crab Orchard. With all the blasting that'll be necessary in those spots, it'll be a long-term project. sigh

True.
Every time I drive Knox to Nash, there's hardly any traffic. I mean, there are lots of cars, but very little traffic. I'm not sure that 3 lanes would be warranted, at least in certain sections - maybe it would be around Cookeville.

Well, I-40 just closed at about mile marker 3 between Asheville, NC and Knoxville, TN. Huge rock slide last night that has buried the freeway for what they saw will be weeks.
From Spartanburg Take 26 to I-40, then take 23/74 West towards 441, that will take you into the south end of Gatlinburg and past some amazing vistas!

Here's a snapshot of 23/74 and 441.
cherokee nc - Google Maps
If you want to stick to interstates, you'll have to continue up 26 into Johnson City (TN), then back down I-81 as it merges with 40 into Sevierville exit, then on to Gatlinburg. That's going to add quite a bit of time to your trip, though.
