It was indeed devastating. We had to leave the restaurant cause we were both crying. I guess sometimes there's no way of knowing what's happening inside those beautiful creatures, as with Barbaro. I hope these incidents don't keep happening though, for horseracing's sake.

Yes, after so many heartwrenching accidents in the past few years, I wonder if we aren't pushing these beautiful animals too hard for our own pleasure. These kinds of tragedies used to be rare. But now...

The death of Eight Belles is so tragic. I have been told by ahorse racing fan that the horses are bred for the slender forelegs and ankles. A tragedy to breed an animal to make it a winner only to make it more vulnerable.

Not too different from world class human athletes, except that an animal has no choices.
