Default Possible move to Maryville area - question

My husband and I moved near White House, TN (25 miles north of Nashville) about 7 months ago from CT. We are so tired of tornado warnings (storm radio went off 5 times last night) and having to take cover each month. Our realtor told us it never happens here; wow, did she want to sell a house to an outsider who doesn't know the truth.

Can someone tell us if tornado activity is a concern in the Maryville area.

Previous to moving to middle TN, we were thinking of Maryville or Sevierville.

Thanks for an input that can help us.

We do get tornado warnings once in a while, but not many for Knoxville or Maryville area. That said, I think one did touch down in Lenoir City and did some damage a few years ago.

I think the tornado risk for this area is actually pretty low. I have only lived here since 1994, so I don't have long term knowledge of them here. I know we have had storms with very high winds, and trees were blown down, but no a tornado per se.

Thanks for your input. It took us over a year to decide where to move in TN and now the search begins again in east TN.

Generally speaking (there are always exceptions) tornado activity is not a concern in east TN, because of the mountains. If I were to list my concerns about moving to this area, tornadoes would be at the absolute bottom. Perhaps we're more likely to have an earthquake.

If Maryville & Sevierville are the areas you like, keep in mind they are a good distance away from each other, at least 45 minutes. I hope someday they'll make a more direct route. Sevierville is very touristy and gets more traffic congestion; Maryville has a college and is much more of a "normal" town (i.e. Sevierville has no mall). Mall meaning JCPenney's, Sears, Bath & Body Works.

Default Sevierville

Sevierville may not have a mall but shopping there is great. They have Bath and Body plus every other store you can think of in the Tanger Shopping Area, right now they have Coach at rediculous prices, big sale. I prefer to shop in Sevierville myself. Not to mention it wont be long and they will have Dumplin(another Turkey Point)shopping area and it will have everything. Cant wait.

From what I understand (and believe), unless a storm comes straight up the valley, you're not gonna get much in terms of severe weather. That's also been our experience. Every time we think the weather might actually do something interesting, it comes off the plateau and dies.

I moved here from KS/MO and at first thought your post was a joke...but apparently that's not the case.

If you have questions about Tornadoes, etc...I'd be happy to help, I'm somewhat of a weather dork.

The odds of a tornado actually hitting where you live are pretty low, so I'm not sure I'd move just for that...but, I've heard of people that won't move to any of the plains states because they're just sure they'll be the next Dorothy.

FWIW, nowhere that I know of is immune to "tornado activity".
