safe place to live?
Hi all! i am moving to knoxville tennessee from southern california and i can't wait.
i have a question, living in southern california as a 23 year old single girl who works 12 hours shifts (i'm a nurse) you have to be VERY careful about where you choose to live.
where in knoxville or knoxville area would be safe for me to leave my two basset hounds alone and come home possibly after dark?
thank you for any help, and i'm sure i sound like a scardy cat but california is rough.
once again thank you for your help.
jamie, droopy and mable (the bassets)

Hi Jamie, congrats on your relocating to Knoxville, and I can make several suggestions, and it all depends on your budget, and how far you want to drive. Post with more specifics, and will be happy to try and help.

well jamie,
not knowing where you would be working, or what time you be getting off, it's hard to give an accurate portrayal of the safest place for you without all the specifics. but.....there are a few places i can say to definitely stay away from. specifically, the fort area around campus, some neighborhoods in east knoxville downtown, some areas around the magnolia st locations, and center city, mechanicsville. these are places that will tend to be more "scary" coming home at night as a single female. there are definitely some nice condo developments, that are well lit, gated communities that offer good protection and a good sense of security. i'd be happy happy to recommend more with some more information.

A condo community in the Inskip, Fountain City area would be a good choice for you. Close to I-75/275 and 640, lots of restaurants and groceries around.
Look in the 37912 zip code. You'll find 1200 sq. ft, 2 bedroom, 2 bath condos, probably with attached garage, in your price range. The Griffins Gate complex is particularly nice.
Also look in the 37923 area code. There are a lot of condos in that area, which is West Knoxville. Many are older condo complexes that have developed mature trees and individuality.
Knoxville has some really nice condo developments, particularly the older ones. At least for my tastes. I live in one and love it.

As a fellow young, single transplant (I'm from South FL myself), I strongly recommend a Downtown condo/loft/apartment. You'll be close to everything--culture, free concerts, bars, clubs, theaters and a brand new cinema. There's also lots of restaurants & shopping; plus, it's between the two malls (10 minute drive to each).
If you're looking for a more suburban atmosphere, go for Sequoya Hills. While only 3 miles from downtown, it's atmosphere is worlds apart. Arguably the most desirable suburb in the state, it's home to billionaires and multi-million dollar estates, but there are also apartments starting @ $150k. There are beautiful parks and river/lake views everywhere there.
The Farragut area is also very nice, newer, a little less upscale than Sequoya, but still solidly upper-middle class. Farragut is closer to the new mall (West Towne) and the new retail park (Turkey Creek), both very nice with great shops & restaurants.

I agree with the downtown suggestion.
I do have one correction to make, however. West Town is not the "new" mall. It was actually the first mall built in Knoxville. Knoxville Center (aka East Town) is newer than West Town.
