Auctions. I've still got some good wood furniture I picked up in Washington, D.C. for $10 many years ago.
You have to pay cash and they don't deliver but the prices can't be beat. Page Auction in Crossville on Saturdays in particular gets some good stuff from the senior community in Fairfield Glade. I've seen solid mahagony dining room suites -- table chairs, china cupboard, buffet -- go for $350.
Page Auction
Closer to home, check out Powell Auction. They've got a "Power Sports" auction next Saturday. Those always include a lot of new furniture.

Local auctions have some great treasures, including artwork and lamps!
Thanks from me and hiknapster, too, I'm sure, knoxgarden. I hadn't thought about the auctions.
We have bought and sold some great pieces of furniture from local auctions. Nothing really fancy or high-priced collectible, but good quality furniture that has served us well.

Thanks for all the advice! I've been running around, and haven't had a chance to respond.
I am really pressed for time, but the auctions sound like a wonderful way to furnish in the future. My immediate needs are probably going to be a sofa, entertainment center, desk, and possibly a table and chairs, although that could wait. I'd also like a patio set and grill.
I am REALLY going to need a washer and dryer, so if anyone knows where there is a good place to get those, it would also be helpful.
I haven't decorated in years, so any help would be great, gem. GBH and SMG can help, too!

Hik - oh, what fun! Sorry I am just now posting. How big and what type of wood do you want for an entertainment center? I agree with checking Craigslist. I just sold some pieces on there. I have to catch up on my reading and then I will come back to play.

See, that is the problem. I just don't know. I haven't even begun to explain the hideous color of the exterior. I think that's why I got such a good deal.
Essentially, I just don't know what I am doing.
Oh, and I have to move the washer and dryer connections about ten feet. I'll need a recommendation for that.
The home inspection should be Wednesday or Thursday. I'll take another look at the house and figure out more about what I will want.

Hey, I have an idea! You can come unpack all those upteen boxes in my garage filled with things that I thought I absolutely had to have, then was certain I had to move cross-country, but now have no clue what they are.
As for the appliances, I would check out those scratch 'n dent places. Sometimes you can get real bargains, if you don't mind a few dings. There's one in West Knoxville, on Middlebrook, I think, that the builders use. Builders Supply, maybe? Or try to catch one of those 20% off sales at Sears. Or even Craigslist, though you'll have to weed through a lot of junk. Kinda like my garage.
