I would live in the house before buying some of the furnishings. That way, you can figure out what you want to go where. Some of my stuff didn't fit at all, then I bought new stuff and decided I didn't want it where I thought I wanted it, and it didn't fit where I really wanted it. Which is why I have an entertainment center on the wrong wall with no TV in it. People start to ask why, then catch my look and wisely keep quiet.
Next time, I'm going to live in the house a week or two before making expensive purchases. Just my .02-- probably not even worth that, but hey, it's free!

As for the appliances, I would check out those scratch 'n dent places. Sometimes you can get real bargains, if you don't mind a few dings. There's one in West Knoxville, on Middlebrook, I think, that the builders use. Builders Supply, maybe? Or try to catch one of those 20% off sales at Sears. Or even Craigslist, though you'll have to weed through a lot of junk. Kinda like my garage.

I'm sure your taste is great. I weeded through a page of craigslist stuff and was appalled. I bet they jumped all over SMG's stuff!
I should check out Builder's Supply. That sounds great.
I bet the furniture stores would negotiate. I drove by someplace called "Oak Factory" on Kingston Pike, today. There's a big "going out of business" sign. Anyone been there?

Yes, Oak Factory is closing down for good. They're liquidating everything. I'm not sure what they have left, but they will definitely negotiate. I believe they're at 75% off. I was looking for bookcases there last week!
They might have entertainment centers, if you like that style.

Wait, that was me! I bought that set!
Just kidding. I probably would've, if I had seen it. Instead, I went to look at the "vintage wrought iron garden bench bought from top designer." It turned out to be last year's rusted-out model from the Martha Stewart collection at Kmart.

That furniture is beautiful, SMG!
I guess I should have stopped at Oak Factory!
Actually, I'm not closing until June 27, and I don't plan on buying anything until I am IN. You know me, paranoid until the end.
Oh, and I don't know what my style is, anymore!

Hi hik....
You're not paranoid, just cautious.
I guess you better start watching HGTV, so you can find your style.
EARLY CONGRATS on your new home....YEAH!!!!!!

Hik,
Have you tried out Brown Squirrel Furniture on the West side? We got great deals there 2 years ago when we needed to furnish an entire house. We also got good deals at Carl Hatcher furniture in Sevierville.
Best of luck to you on your new home,
Pam

Hik, this is just too exciting. DH said to tell you to come to our house and take whatever you want! Hey, I want to keep some of this stuff. He can't wait to downsize and say good-bye to a lot of furniture.
I agree with GBH and others. Always live in your house and see how it "lives" first. You might decide that your eating area needs a round table after you just bought a farmhouse rectangular one. Or, the 3rd bedroom should be an office for the computer, and not Grandma's guest room.
This is going to be such a treat for you and there are so many things to do, so take your time and enjoy each one.
I always found the best appliance bargains at Sears. They always seem to have an out-going model of somebody's washer and dryer that can be had for a nice price.
Buying used appliances sometimes means that you are buying someone else's repair problem. I would much rather spend my money on a scratch and dent, which we have done aplenty over the years, and get something reliable at the get-go.
*Disclaimer: My two cents is costs the same as GBH's, but her is worth 2 cents more!! As you know, she claims she is not a real estate agent, interior decorator, gardener, or food gourmet. Hmmmmm.
