If Louisville is your area of work, then you will likely want to live in Maryville or Alcoa to keep the commute to a reasonable level.

Downtown or that Riverside area as suggested should be very cool/hip, but it could be a bit of a haul.

If you don't mind the commute, then you have lots of options in terms of "flavors" of neighborhoods.

I live in Holston Hills which is a vintage country club neighborhood. It is still quite affordable, heavily forested, and with all sorts of architecture.

I would guess that the schools in Alcoa or Maryville would be pretty darn good, though!

It looks like I may be moving to Knoxville myself. There is a possibility that I may be teaching at Franklin High. Where is fourth and Gill? My only experiences of being in Knoxville is driving through on my way to Nashville. I am also looking for a gay friendly neighborhood for myself and my daughter. I need a place that will be safe for two petite women.

Franklin High is south of Nashville, a good 200 miles from Knoxville.

Franklin is just west of Murfreesboro and seems like a pretty nice place with a population around 45,000. Can't really say how gay friendly it is though.

Default Gay couple moving to Knoxville

I don't know how much this will help, but my daughter goes to Maryville HS and her best friend is a young gay male. From listening to them talk, he doesn't get anymore teasing than any of her other friends, so maybe Maryville is an alternative for you. It's close to Louisville, with a small college and lots of available housing and a good school system (which you will care about in about 5 years!). Hope this helps.

I say Maryville is going to be what the OP is looking for. Louisville/Alcoa is ok, but some sections can be a bit (clearing throat) less progressive then Maryville. Of course I'm biased.... If you choose Maryville let me know, would be happy to bring my wife to your housewarming.

Default Looking at moving to Maryville

We were looking for info on the Maryville area and this thread came up.....my wife and I and our 4 children (from donors) may be moving to Maryville soon if a job comes through and we were concerned with the level of acceptance of alternative families as our oldest will be in 7th grade and afraid to move schools with 2 moms. We live in a very small town in Ohio as it is, so not that we are used to a great community as it is just don't want to move somewhere less accommodating....looking at very rural housing as that is what we have now. Found some nice houses but kinda worry about when they find out our "lifestyle". Any advice would be appreciated as we need at least a 5 bedroom 3 bath house with acreage.
