Some things to think about when looking at SC versus TN that have nothing to do with your dog:

-in SC there is personal property tax on your vehicle that must be paid before you can get license plates for it, and you have to pay it every year when renewing. In TN, you only have to pay for the plates.

-property taxes in SC are higher than TN.

-SC has a pretty steep income tax tax. TN has no income tax.

-SC has much lower sales tax, around 6.5% in some place. TN has 9.5% or more in some places.

Default Anyone in Knoxville who used to live in Greenville, SC area?

Just wondering if there was anyone out there who could give me some good comparisons between the two cities first hand?? We are trying to decide what to do. I've been to the Greenville forum lurking as well.

Thanks!

[quote=sassykat&joe;5793837]Some things to think about when looking at SC versus TN
-SC has a pretty steep income tax tax. TN has no income tax.

Tennessee has something called the Hall Income Tax which can be pretty high. If your income is from dividends or interest then 6% of that income goes to the State.

And think about the tax on groceries which adds a considerable amount to your yearly cost of food. There are local options which can raise the sales tax to 10%.

Also the State does the assessment on your home and most counties are in dire need of money to keep the politicians well fed at the public trough and property taxes are certain to go up in the future. Some aressa have a wheel tax which varies from what I've heard. Add that to your taxes as well. So 16% or more goes to the state for sales tax and if you're unlucky (or lucky to have some money saved and have investments) then you get a portion of that taken and with rising property taxes you can be paying maybe 20% or more of your total income to taxes. For the pleasure of paying these taxes you get beautiful scenery, mild winters, and places to fish after you buy your license.

Yes. The tax burden is a bit higher in SC. It's 37th in the country, which isn't too bad, but TN is 44th.

The schools here are terrible, the teachers are great but they are told what they will teach in the classrooms and to the exact second the length of time spent teaching. If you are GBLT then you will be harrased all of your life and you will not be able to keep a job once they find you out. Twenty teachers this school year alone were forced to resign by their principals because they were either gay or bisexual.
What Bizarro Greenville did you inhabit??? My partner & I have lived here, in the deepest, darkest burbs, for 10 years, and have had nothing but kind, generous and supportive neighbors, co-workers and bosses.

Greenville County has fine schools by any standard. Any teachers being forced to resign were more likely due to lower tax income coming to the schools due to the economy than anything else. Get your facts right!
