West & East Knoxville
My family and I are considering moving to the Knoxville area in the near future and I was wondering if there were any major differences between west and east Knoxville. The east side seems to be a little more affordable but I will be working in the west area. How is the commute on I40 and does it matter where in Knoxville you live with property taxes? Thanks for any help...

Property tax rates are the same no matter where you live in Knoxville. If you live in unincorporated Knox County you don't pay city property taxes. But that also means you'll have to pay for garbage collection and your homeowners insurance will probably be higher.
If you're working in West Knox, I highly recommend living there. What's your price range? Maybe some people in this forum can help you find something within your budget in West Knox.
East Knoxville is older and has the reputation of having more crime. I happen to like East Knoxville and would feel very comfortable living there (particularly since I used to live in Memphis which is infinitely worse than Knoxville when it comes to crime). But most locals will tell you to avoid East Knoxville if you can.

Hmmmm. Having lived here my whole life, I would pick West Knoxville in the Bearden area. North Knoxville has charming little patches, but is surrounded by high crime areas. South Knoxville has nice neighborhoods, but is surrounded by rednecks and crime areas and everyone I have met including me, has a bad South Knoxville story. East Knoxville is countryside and has many low priced areas that are nice to live in, but a trailer park coming in and ruining property values is always a danger. Yep, I would recommend West Knoxville. The streets are better patrolled, there are many good places to shop and eat dinner and housing prices are still fairly reasonable.
Right now, I-40 is in somewhat of a mess, but the I-640 loop is handling the flow. Depending on where you work, Middlebrook Pike is the way to get from North Knoxville to West Knoxville. You can usually get from Downtown to Lovell Rd in 20 minutes.

Downtown, Bearden, Fountain City, or Island Homes. Avoid anything off Chapman near downtown. East is ok past Burlington/Five Points (ie Holston Hills and mall area)

You'll probably find better prices on the west side by looking in the older neighborhoods in what's called Near West -- areas around West Town Mall. Some very nice, very conveniently located older neighborhoods with affordable houses on big lots and good schools.
Look in Zip codes 37923, 37919, 37922.
Some areas are West Hills, Concord, Bluegrass, Rocky Hill.
You don't want to commute I-40. It's a major trucking route and can get backed up easily.

Hey goldie, I admitt, I have lived in West Knoxville, all my adult life, and the travel from east to west, can be challenging. Many places, close to West Knox, will include, the Bearden area, West Hills, Crestwood Hills, Gulfwood, and the Hardin Valley area, is growing like mad, with new store, and several new subdvs, and the Karns area, is also close, so share a price range, and we can help guide you better.

'Avoid anything off Chapman near downtown"
Well Lindbergh Forest is right off Chapman, 1 mile from downtown. It's one of the prettiest neighborhoods in town, IMHO.
