I think you have the two cheapest ways right there. The more work you do, the less anything is going to be. We rented a penske 16 foot truck for the day for $30.00 plus mileage. I don't know how helpful that is but if you're doing all the loading and unloading, then renting the truck should be your only expense.

Pods
I have never used them, but the PODS people came to our office to talk to us - if you get on www.pods.com you should be able to find the local office. I don't know anybody cheaper to help you move - we have teenagers and so use their labor - what I save on money I lose by having to listen to griping, LOL!

We used pods on our move from Florida. It worked great. I do hear prices have really gone up in the last year but was great for us.

when we moved in July 06 (from FL) the price for PODS was insane. If you have precious furniture and belongings, you're better off paying for a nationwide mover to wrap everything and do it correctly. Or as you say do it yourself. Just don't use some local TN company.

how we did it
When I moved here to Tn in Sept I got estimates from just about every mover in Fl and they were all outrageous. Ended up getting the biggest UHaul and paid a moving company to come load me and then had movers come unload me, worked out great and the cheapest not to mention made the move easier than doing it all ourselves.

I just got estimates on a TN to NM move and pods was 33xx.00, ABF (upack, they move it, you unpack) 22xx.00 and Penske was a couple hundred... four something, i think? And the PODS unit was waaay small, the ABF was the equivalent of a 16 foot truck, the Penske was the 26 footer.

Hi! we are leaving Monday from Sarasota to Knoxville. We went with penske, 26 footer,$1300. That is having the truck 5 days, and with discounts for ordering on line. UHaul is not maintaining their equipment very well ,"got that from the horses mouth".Gas is going to be expensive Truck & 2 Cars!
Free boxes on Craig's list, and there are movers that will load for you.$30to 40 PER HOUR. Will let you know how it all goes.
Where in FL? to Where in Knox? We will be in Fountain City.

Move
I forgot, we went with UHaul because hubby worked for a storage place that rented them so we got a discount, Penske was going to be our choice originally. Gas will be the most, my hairdresser just did a round trip to Destin Fl in a Nissan Frontier and gas was $350 for the round trip.
