To get an idea of the food and fun here, try Feast with the Beasts at the Knoxville Zoo on Aug. 16
ZOO
There's a wonderful exhibit of Gee's Bend Quilts at the Knoxville Museum of Art
Mary Lee Bendolph, Gee’s Bend Quilts and Beyond
A good way to see them is by going to Alive After 5 on Friday, Aug. 15. You get good food and music for a small fee:

Are you going to have kids with you? Knoxville is a very family-friendly place. Are you sticking to just Knoxville, or are you also going to explore other places in East Tennessee?
Be warned, it's probably going to be very hot and sticky. I'm going to be rock climbing that weekend up in the mountains where it's nice and cool, swimming in a deep mountain lake with ice cold water. I love East Tennessee and am grateful we have mountains where we can go and cool off!
At any rate, if you don't have your kids with you, you and your wife/husband might enjoy just wandering around the mountains (the kids might get a little bored). I'd avoid the whole Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area unless you happen to like lots of traffic with your mountains. Just north of Knoxville is the Museum of Appalachia in a little town called Norris. If you're into historical things, you might enjoy it. Otherwise, Norris Lake (next to Norris) is beautiful and might be fun to explore.
Have a great trip!

Yep, we are bringing the 3 little ones with us. This might be the place of our choice to relocate to so want them to feel comfortable as well.

Wow! Gee's Bend Quilts! I had no idea this was at the museum. I haven't been yet, but this will be the perfect to go and see the entire museum. Thanks, knoxgarden, again.
TiredOf Chicago: It will be great to have you! Knoxville is not a huge city like Chicago. It is like a very, very large town. But if you stick around a bit, you will start running into people you know, but have some city amenities, and find that you are raising your kids in a great environment.

The kids might like the Children's Museum in Oak Ridge.

You need to think of some places where you'll be out of the heat during the day. You might want to consider a Knoxville riverboat cruise with lunch.
I wouldn't recommend anything with a lot of walking around outdoors in August during the day.
